Synopsis:

“I thrust my hand toward the sky as my voice begs the Elemental inside me to waken and rise. But it’s no use. The curse I’ve spent my entire life abhorring—the thing I trained so hard to control—no longer exists.”

Nym risked her life to save Faelen, her homeland, from a losing war, only to discover that the shape shifter Draewulf has stolen everything she holds dear. But when the repulsive monster robs Nym of her storm-summoning abilities as well, the beautiful Elemental realizes her war is only just beginning.

Now powerless to control the elements that once emboldened her, Nym stows away on an airship traveling to the metallic kingdom of Bron. She must stop Draewulf. But the horrors he’s brought to life and the secrets of Bron are more than Nym bargained for. Then the disturbing Lord Myles tempts her with new powers that could destroy the monster, and Nym must decide whether she can compromise in the name of good even if it costs her very soul.

As she navigates the stark industrial cityscape of Bron, Nym is faced with an impossible choice: change the future with one slice of a blade . . . or sacrifice the entire kingdom for the one thing her heart just can’t let go.

Review:

Well things were left on a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of Storm Siren with Nym finding out that Eogan had been taken over by Draewulf. It just means that you have a great starting off point for where the story is going to go, and what an adventure it is!

From the moment Nym finds out that Draewulf has taken over Eogan she throws everything she has at him with her powers to destroy him but in the process she loses the one thing that could help everyone else – her powers. Draewulf has somehow managed to take them from her or just block them from her. Ultimately leaving her helpless to stop him for what he plans to do next in the façade of being Eogan.

After Draewulf – posing as Eogan – gets the peace talks over with he plans to take some of the delegates back over to his home land to finalise things. Nym can see this as being just a cover and decides to try and sneak on the ship – with the help of Rasha and a reluctant Myles – to see if she can try and stop him. To begin with she thinks that she would just need to find a way to kill Draewulf to end everything as she thinks she has lost Eogan already. It is only after Rasha – using her Luminescent gift – tells her that the beast has not taken over Eogan completely yet, he is still holding on partly due to his gift of blocking that Nym dares to hope to save him. Nym now knows the only way to save Eogan is to try and separate the two from each other; she just doesn’t know how to do it. This is where Myles comes in handy as he has a plan up his sleeve – mainly for world domination – but it is one that may help Nym in what she wants to do.

While on board the ship Nym finds a weakness with Draewulf when provoking him. She just keeps asking why he hasn’t just tried to kill her, to which he has no answer but Nym already knows it is because Eogan is still strong enough inside to stop him. It’s at this moment that he becomes strong enough to come to the surface to talk to her. He knows what she has planned but can’t see it working so asks her to do the one thing to save everyone that she just can’t – kill him. She can’t believe he has asked her to do this and asks if the places were reversed would he be strong enough to do the same to her. This whole interaction has just made her that much more determined to do whatever it takes to save him – even taking on another power.

Once they land at Bron Myles sees his chance of bringing her round to his way of thinking. He takes her to a witch to get something a little more powerful, but in turn comes out darker than what she is used to trying to wield. Once Nym has this power it almost starts to consume her and she starts to scare those around who have been trying to help. They can’t seem to understand that this was her only option of getting Eogan back but even that is uncertain.

In the wake of the battle lost against Faelen the Bron soldiers are wanting a victory and so seem all too eager to follow, after some strong persuasion, what Draewulf (as Eogan) is suggesting next. To take their need for a battle to Tulla’s door and with an army that much more deadlier than what they already have – Lady Isobel’s Dark Army of the dead. A battle that could start a war between all five lands and Nym must find a way to prevent it all from happening at the same time she is trying to save Eogan. Though with so many hidden agendas from all sides she must look inside herself to find her true gift, only then might she be able to save those she cares about.

What an ending, talk about drama! Another epic battle but this time showing what the ships are really capable of doing, but more so what the Dark Army is capable of doing. Bit of a cliffhanger again but that just leads you into wanting to know what is going to happen next. In the final battle it’s going to be Nym and Eogan against Draewulf for the final take down. With Nyms true lineage coming to light she is going to learn more about who her people were and that in turn – hopefully – will help them overcome what is to come next. I for one can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
