Synopsis:

When the latest string of murders, sweeping New York City, lands on Detective Fitzgerald S. Rodriguez’s desk, the signature evidence hits too close to home. Being unable to stop the murder of his own mother has made Fitz a jaded man. Now, he will stop at nothing to protect the one he loves.

Serial killer, Mark Chambers, is like a cat that preys on unsuspecting mice for sport. When a fresh kill no longer quenches his sexual appetite, he sets his sights on Makenna Justice. The fiery-redhead, with her emerald green eyes, ignites a fire in him that he hasn’t had since his first kill.

Time is of the essence for all three of them.

Mark must feed into his desires once more without leaving a trail.

Fitz has to dig himself deep into a killer’s mind to catch him.

And Makenna? —She just has to stay alive.

This book contains scenes and/or incidents of domestic violence, which may be triggering to survivors. Intended for 18+ mature readers only. Contains strong language and sexual situations, which may be offensive to some people.

Review:

I loved this book and it goes down as another off my 2015 Reading Challenge – A book that scares you (well not so much scare as I don’t read horrors but this has some darker moments due to a serial killer being in it so I’m counting it). There is so much intrigue that it keeps you hooked right from the first page. As a reader you know straight away who the killer is which is interesting as most of the time you are trying to figure it out along with the other characters. This made it that much more intense as you were waiting to see how he was going to make his move. With the story being told from different peoples POVs you got a more in depth feel for the overall story itself making it more believable with what is happening to them all. Made it into a more interesting world to be drawn into.

Mark is a serial killer who has been looking for the one perfect kill. The one to hold above all the others and from the moment he saw Makenna he knew she was the one he had been waiting for. He is willing to do anything to get her and will bide his time until the perfect opportunity comes to claim what he sees as his.

Fitz is a cop who specialises in catching killers; he seems to be able to get into the minds of them. His haunted past seems to push him into being the best cop he can be and when its Makenna’s life in the balance he will do anything and everything in his power to protect her. She has seen him as her superman from the moment they met and this case might just put that to the test. But when Makenna admits she has feelings for him his focus on the case might start to waver, putting Makenna’s life at risk in the process.

Makenna has been in love with Fitz for as long as she can remember. She has always put him on this pedestal and never thought for one moment that he could be hers. When a string of murders leads Fitz to believe there is a link to her club he asks to be pulled into her world – only problem is that it’s the one place Makenna doesn’t want to see him. When her brother got sick she had to step up and take care of everything – her parents mortgage, brothers medical care – it all got too much. From having to have control over everything she needed an escape and she found it at Mystik. A place where she could submit completely and be taken care of for a change, it became her escape and saviour – which is why her brother brought it for her to run and use. When Fitz says he needs to have complete access to the club and act as a member this pushes Makenna to admit her feelings for him, as she can’t bare the thought of him being there like that with anyone. To say he is shocked is an understatement but she’s not the only one who has been holding back on her feelings.

Both Fitz and Makenna have been good at hiding their feelings from each other but not so much with the rest of their family. When they finally break down the barriers that have been keeping them apart they might find the strength to get through the darkness that the killer has put upon them. With Mark closing in it’s a race against time to find and catch him before he manages to catch Makenna. Superman can stop a flying bullet; let’s see what Fitz can do.

Even though there were a few different POVs to get your head around I don’t think it hurt the story – it helped. You got to see inside the twisted mine of a killer when he was about to attack but also saw him when he played the role of ‘loving father and husband’ showing that things are never quite as they seem. The chemistry between Fitz and Makenna is awesome and when they finally break down those walls around each other nothing is going to stop them from getting the HEA they have both been wanting. This is a great story that has so much going for it. I would definitely recommend it to a friend but is for a more mature reader with the content within.
