Synopsis:

First love. Last love. Only love. Well, at least that’s how Ryder Collins thinks of the girl he lost because of his addiction ten years ago. While Ryder is battling the demons of his past to save his future, he will start to question the nightmare that has become his reality and the illusive blue dream that he swears started it all.

Review:

OMG OMG OMG I absolutely loved this book! Right from the first chapter I was hooked and knew that if I didn’t have to get up early for work the next day I would have read all night – as it was I read till midnight anyway. Slightly panicking now though as have to wait till February for the next part. I’m not sure I can wait that long! So if you don’t like waiting between books then I would hold off until you can read both back to back.

A very cleverly laid out story of two halves told from both Presley and Ryder’s perspectives. They show what they are doing in present day and how both their lives have turned out. Then take us back to the past to where everything began and how because of one moment the path they were on changed forever. A trip down memory lane if you will, however not all memories remembered are good ones. Such a gritty, heart wrenching story that draws you in and refuses to let you go – not that I wanted it to.

The relationship that Ryder and Presley had as teens was electric and you can see why they would be addicted to each other. Both were very easily led in how they thought they should act in the ‘school environment’ though which ultimately caused problems. No matter what obstacles were in their way they were always going to be drawn together. Ryder doesn’t realise until now he’s getting help though that when you are constantly chasing the next high you start losing yourself within.

Ryder is back in rehab and Doc, his shrink, is trying to help him through the last part of his programme before he can (or if he can) be released. He is getting him to think back to what the catalyst for his downward spiral of substance abuse was. To find the point where everything started to go wrong for him and by extension his relationship with Presley. He is the first person that Ryder feels actually wants to know and so it helps him begin to tell his story for the first time. Admitting things to Doc, and at times to himself, for the first time. He breaks it down for Doc, telling him about his first high, something so sweet that nothing could compare. She’s that one high he will never truly give up – no matter what. His first high was Presley, his very own Blue Dream and he destroyed her.

Presley has never really dealt with her past relationship with Ryder. It’s not until her best friend asks for her help with her new book that she has a chance to look back and see it all in a different light. Her friend is using her past relationship as a base for what women find themselves doing for love. It’s only after reliving the past that she truly sees how much it affected her then and still affects her now. She questions her current relationship because of it and wonders whether she will always hold out for the love that said he would always be there for her. Someone who said they would find their way back to her, and them, no matter what. How far would you go to save the one you love before you realise they have to want to save themselves first or your both be lost.

Love the ending so much as it gives you a great starting off point for what’s to come next. Presley has some decisions to make and from the sneak peak preview at the end of the book it looks like her past might soon meet her present. Love the authors’ style of writing and how she draws you in effortlessly into the story. Can’t wait for the next one!

Book Review: ‘Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic’ by Meghan Ciana Doidge

Cupcakes 1

Title: Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser Series Book 1)

Published: 9th January 2014

Publisher: Old Man in the CrossWalk Productions

Author: Meghan Ciana Doidge

Synopsis:

If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept — was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it. That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

——————————————————-

This 68,000 word urban fantasy is the first book of the Dowser Series by author Meghan Ciana Doidge.

Review:

All my favourite paranormal creatures thrown together with cupcakes – what fun to be had! Goes down as another off my 2015 Reading Challenge – A book with magic. This one definitely has its fair share of magic.

Intricate story involving a lot of characters that all seem to radiate towards Jade. She draws people to her no matter who or ‘what’ they are. This story is about her finding herself, and trying to not always hide behind her grandmother and mother.

Jade knows about magic but has always thought that she didn’t carry much within her. They only thing she thinks she can do is make amazing cupcakes (with quite interesting names!) and draw magic to her, or more to the point magical beings. When they are around she can almost feed off their energy, which makes her feel alive. Her life has always been about following the rules (unlike her wayward sister) but when a vampire turns up at her cupcake shop they seem to get thrown out the window. He brings with him his own troubles. When he insists that he is there to see if she is the one that has something to do with the recent bought of murders she can’t help but think that she has stepped into the twilight zone. This is a story that consists of a very interesting mix of witches, werewolves and a vampire. Put them all together with some murders thrown into the mix to solve and you have yourself a party.

You are practically begging Jade to get with at least one of the hotties that have crossed her path though throughout the book (my monies on the vampire later in the series). There are some very fine specimens to choose from – even if they might scare her a little at first. You have a vampire, werewolf, werecat or the human lawyer to choose from. So tell me, who would you think is the most tempting or scary?

Some parts of the story are a bit predicable and the ending is seen a mile off but I was still drawn into the world that has been created. I am intrigued to see how Jade will grow into a much more confident and assertive woman now she knows that truth about who she is and what she is really capable of.

Book Review: ‘Good Girl vs. Bad Boy’ by Jessie Evans

Good Girl vs Bad Boy

Title: Good Girl vs. Bad Boy

Published: 15th November 2015

Author: Jessie Evans

Facebook: www.facebook.com/JessieEvansRomance

Twitter: @JessieDEvans

Synopsis:

Let the battle of the sexes begin… He’s hot, wild, unpredictable, untamable, and her best friend’s older brother.

Colton Brody is everything a good girl like Phoebe Page should avoid. But since her sister Kelly’s death, Phoebe isn’t as worried about being good as she used to be. She wants to live big with no regrets, the way Kelly did, and she intends to start with having a top secret, super steamy, no-strings-attached holiday fling with the man she’s crushed on her entire life.

What could go wrong?

Except everything?

Wounded in action and discharged without a chance to prove himself, all Colton cares about is getting back into the Marine Corps where he belongs. He will not get sucked into small town drama, will not take that promotion at the firehouse, and certainly won’t fall in love with his little sister’s best friend. He’s down for friends-with-benefits, nothing more, and plans to leave town long before quirky, bossy, cute-as-a-button Phoebe can get under his skin.

He is in control.

At least until a certain sexy brunette turns his world upside down.

It isn’t long before Colton finds himself buying flowers, talking feelings, and wishing Phoebe wanted more than another night of hot, no-holds-barred sex. Because when he’s with Phoebe even hot and dirty feels like making love.

Now Colton will have to decide what’s worth fighting for–the dreams a plane crash stole from him or the dream he’s holding in his arms.

WARNING: Good Girl vs. Bad Boy contains a mix of heart-warming romance, quirky characters, laugh out loud moments, and blisteringly hot banging. If you don’t like hot sex, laughter, mentions of humping unicorns, turkey bowling, off-beat town rituals, or graphic descriptions of artisanal pancakes, steer clear.

Review:

Loved this book right from the first page. Laughing so much at work while reading that I had to explain myself. Then almost couldn’t even do that as explaining what was making me laugh made me laugh even more! Completely loved the authors’ style of writing and will definitely be checking out what else she has written.

OMG what else can go wrong for Phoebe within minutes of waking up!?! But hey if it gets you half naked into the arms of your hot high school crush – who only seems to have gotten hotter – then it can’t be all bad.

Phoebe is back in her hometown Lover’s Leap and can’t wait to start over fresh again after the death of her sister. Her plan is to set up a shop and try to live life to the full, with no regrets, like her sister would have wanted her to. She seriously has some bad luck though with falling off things, which is where the lovely Colton comes in to the rescue. He seems like just the right man to try out her new no regrets, live life to the full way of life on.

Colton is back in Lover’s Leap after being discharged from the Marines having been wounded in action. For over a year now he has been bidding his time and trying to get back in shape so that he can go back into the marines. While at the same time also being a fireman – he can rescue me any day! That has been his plan and nothing and no one is going to stop him. Well that is until Phoebe falls into his arms not once but twice in one day. She definitely knows how to make a lasting impression (humping unicorn pj’s will do that). When she says that she is just looking for some fun while he is still in town he doesn’t know whether to jump right in or hang back, as he gets the feeling things will never just be simple between them.

Neither is looking to start something serious but they can’t deny the chemistry between them. Phoebe definitely knows how to get under Colton’s skin and once she is there he starts to think that he wants her to stay forever. Once they start down this road nothing will be the same again – so sit back and hold on for a fun bumpy ride.

Completely fell in love with the town they live in – frozen turkey bowling, coffin races – I so want to live there, just brilliant! Fantastic characters, loved their personalities, I have to say they are some of the best I have read. Funny, fantastic, smouldering hot read that is going to warm you up on a cold winters day, so enjoy.

Synopsis:

An Erotic Romance Series by USA Today Bestselling Author Priscilla West

“What gives you a thrill Kristen?”

The conclusion to the Surrender Series by Priscilla West.

No one is who they seem to be.

I let Vincent into my heart because he seemed so different from everyone in my conservative world of wealth management. I thought we shared something special, but Vincent has been playing me this entire time.

As our relationship reaches a crisis point, a man from my past returns looking for a second chance. Is my ex really looking for redemption or is his goal something more sinister?

I try my best to hold it all together, until I discover a revelation that will change everything.

Review:

So finally we get to see what Kristen’s past was like. After the cliff hanger of Secret Surrender I thought Beautiful Surrender would start where it left off but instead we go back in time to when Kristen first met her ex Marty. Really like this as it gives you an insight as to what happened and why she would be so scared of him coming back on the scene. Definitely brining a bit more drama to the book that I felt Secret Surrender lacked a bit.

After getting an insight into Kristen’s past with her ex Marty you are thrown right back to the present where Secret Surrender left off. Marty standing at her door, thank god she left the chain on! To begin with he seems really genuine in his reasons for being there but you get the underlying feeling that something is just not right with him. When he leans through the door, almost touching Kristen, he gets a shock though as her neighbours suddenly go Rambo on his arse. Turns out that they are the hired guards she specifically told Vincent she didn’t want or need. After reeling from seeing the text message on Vincent’s phone from his ex she feels shocked at how glad she is to see him. That is until he starts beating the hell out of Marty. She has never seen this side to him before and she has to admit to herself that she is a bit scared. Even though she knows he would never hurt her, it has made her question the fact that she still really doesn’t know him that well at all.

After Marty gets taken away Kristen remembers why she was so mad at him. She lays right into him about the fact she knows he cheated – or did he! Well no he didn’t, turns out that the message was actually in reference to the name of his new surfboard called shuttlecock. But hey if you read a message on your boyfriends phone from his ex saying she had fun riding his cock I’m sure you would react the same way. At least her friend can almost make her see the funny side to it later that night.

After the intense fights that they have had – misread text message and hiring guards didn’t go down well – Kristen thinks that they should take a step back. She only manages to hold out for like a second before she is back in Vincent’s arms though. Their relationship is hot and steamy and going full speed ahead whether they like it or not – maybe even a little faster than they can handle.

I liked that not only we saw a different more innocent side to what Kristen was like and how she has changed and grown but that you also got a chance to see Vincent in a different light aswell when he was around his sister and her family. Seeing Vincent in a family setting showing how much he loves his nephew and with him making more of an effort to be with her, and not be away on business so much, just makes Kristen fall for him even more. But with a crazy ex out there looking for revenge just waiting for the right moment to strike you have to wonder whether they will ever get their HEA.

Drama reaches crisis point in the big finale between Kristen, Vincent and Marty but it did feel a little rushed. As did the scenes and extra storyline added into the mix at this point. Kristen didn’t really have a handle on what to do in her situation and her characterisation at this point felt a little off. You felt the need to shout at Kristen at one point to get her to remember what Vincent brought her to protect herself with – hello taser gun and pepper spray! All in all I now think that the series would have felt stronger and had a bit more of an impact if it had been one big novel and if the endings extra storyline had been developed a little more. It was pretty clear after a while how the story would play out but it was an interesting light read nevertheless. Well who doesn’t love a billionaire playboy turn boyfriend romance!

Secret Surrender

Title: Secret Surrender

Goodreads: www.goodreads.com/author/show/6761816.Priscilla_West

Synopsis:

A Romance Novel by USA Today Bestselling Author Priscilla West

Note: This is the second book in Vincent & Kristen’s story. Please read Forbidden Surrender first, in order to fully enjoy this book.

“What gives you a thrill Kristen?”

I knew that giving in to Vincent Sorenson was a risk, but it was one I was willing to take. I had hidden my heart for so long and for the first time in a long time, Vincent was close to breaking down the walls.

When a trip to Vincent’s exclusive private island reveals the real Vincent underneath the layers of suave nonchalance, I thought we were close to the start of something special.

Just when things were looking up for us, I would discover the one secret that Vincent never intended for me to find.

Review:

Well this starts right where Forbidden Surrender left off. The first book didn’t leave on much of a cliff hanger but more felt like it fed straight into this one, which did make it flow seamlessly. Still full of hot and steamy scenes between Kristen and Vincent though, so lots to entertain throughout.

Vincent and Kristen are now a couple but because of still wanting/needing to keep it a secret (Vincent is now a client of Kristen’s firm where she is his advisor) cracks start to appear in their relationship. More so because Vincent is away on business so much, something that Kristen knew about but didn’t fully grasp the implications of straight away.

When he is with her Kristen feels like he is really there but when they are apart you are almost in agreement with Kristen that its like she doesn’t exist or that she just isn’t a priority to him. She knows it’s early days in their relationship but when she starts to realize how quick and strong her feelings for him are becoming she finally understands that a relationship with someone who is constantly travelling might not be the best person to be with. Though with being apart so much but needing each other so badly you do have to come up with some interesting ways to feed the need – fun skype call anyone!

When they do have time together though Vincent again does go above and beyond anything Kristen could come up with. Anyone fancy a surprise weekend away on a private island? I know I would. Think of all the fun you can have naked and wet by a waterfall! Time alone is just what they needed to reconnect after being apart. They do make up for lost time on this break away but it’s also when Kristen meets one of Vincent’s ex’s. A blond bombshell who happens to be a model/surfer, so you can see why she would feel put out and insecure about why Vincent would be with someone like her when he could be with his ex.

When they first met Kristen could see how women would flock to him – his charm could draw anyone and everyone to him. Vincent doesn’t come across as a brooding male billionaire but definitely a playboy. It’s that fact that makes Kristen nervous in their relationship that he could stray with one of those carefree women he seems to draw to him so much while being away on business. With the threat of her ex never far from her mind and a text message that is hard to swallow it might be trouble in paradise for these two.

Much better cliff hanger ending with this one that makes sure you want to read about what is going to happen in the final installment. I kind of feel though that the first two books would have been better as one. In this one the back-story hasn’t really been delved into yet and even though you know the threat of the ex is real you don’t actually hear much about it until right at the end. With Vincent being away so much throughout this one I felt Kristen’s character kind of lost her way. She was feeling so safe with him that when he goes away she almost doesn’t know what to do with herself. Which is a contrast to the feisty bold women from the first book, but this might have more to do with her insecurities about her ex being back on the scene than anything else. So let’s see what happens in the final installment and hope that there is a bit more drama throughout.
