It’s not every day a girl gets to meet the most powerful man in the world – but it’s not every girl that’s deemed USEFUL. I’ve been deemed USEFUL to the heir apparent to the Roman Emperor!

My skin prickles with awareness of him.

His hips form a perfect V; his chest seems forged from iron.

I long to touch him.

I long to be possessed by him.

I long to lose all sense of Theodora and be lost in Justinian.

Crazy, impetuous, domineering Justinian. With each word he speaks, I drift deeper into the maelstrom of his mind.

They tell me he has unusual tastes. They tell me I must surrender to him. But as a former courtesan, it’s mostly been ME in charge. I’ve given pleasure to many, secure in my own sensuality, except now THIS man, this beautiful, fascinating man is pushing me… changing me… showing me the bittersweet pleasure in pain.

But when his true plans for me reveal themselves, and the darkness in Justinian comes to the fore, he threatens my integrity… threatens my very spirit.

Will his darkness swallow me whole?

I’m about to find out.

Advisory: this novel contains vivid erotica and consensual BDSM. Most definitely 18+

An erotic twist on a 6th century story about Emperor Justinian and his wife Theodora and I loved every second of it. Goes down as another off my 2015 Reading Challenge – A book a friend recommended.

Theodora has been away from Constantinople – and her painful memories – for too long. So when her mentor the Patriarch of Alexandria says she must return with a letter to hand to Justinian she gladly follows through with his request. She never makes it direct to Justinian though but to Narses instead who informs her what the letter holds. She had no idea that it would detail how her mentor thinks that she would be the ideal person to help show Justinian how to create the best form of celebration after he is appointed Consul. In her mentors opinion he thinks that it could be valuable to his cause and their beliefs if Justinian find her useful – in anyway he see fit. The fact she has been told he is very handsome and that most would call him an Adonis is neither here nor there. She knows that even the most beautiful face can hold the devil inside and she will not be anyone’s whore. The Narses informs her that she would not need to use brothel ways with Justinian and that if he likes her then he will take the lead. Not having much of a choice with the situation she finds herself she agrees to meeting Justinian before she decides whether to stay and help – she just never imagined the journey she would go down the moment she does.

Justinian is a working machine. After taking over more roles and responsibilities with running the Empire for his uncle his personal life has taken a back seat. His tastes are very selective and it wouldn’t be right to broadcast it with just picking the first woman he sees. He had someone once who showed him what he really wanted and needed but when her need grew too far beyond what he was willing to do he knew he had to let her go. He has been waiting for someone just as special and unique and from the first moment he saw Theodora he knew that she was it. He didn’t get to her in time to save her before but now she is in his sights again he will do everything to convince her that this is where she needs to be, right by his side and hopefully in his bed. He makes her a deal, if she stays with him and gives him the benefit of her knowledge of the life in the city he will make her a powerful women. He asks only one thing in return – that when they are alone she will be subservient to him. He likes to dominate in the bedroom and can’t wait for her to submit. He won’t coerce her but will persuade her in anyway he can see fit (turning up naked to the baths she’s in should do the trick) and after seeing what one touch does to her he doesn’t think he will have to wait long. She says she needs a few days to decide but in all honesty she wanted him from the moment she saw him but it’s going to take a lot of trust to be able to be the perfect partner she thinks he needs.

Slowly throughout the flow of the present day story you are shown glimpses of Theodora’s and Justinian’s past and its only when you see them all that you get a better picture of the hardships both of them have faced and managed to come out the other side of. The more time they spend together the more trust starts to build between them. Theodora learns more about herself and what she really needs and in turn finds what she was missing. She has always had a submissive side but she was just waiting for the perfect master to surrender herself to. Justinian is the perfect man to show her the connection between pleasure and pain and that what pleases her is what ultimately pleases him. The chemistry between them is off the charts and when they get together its electric. But with unrest and danger rising within the city and palace walls Justinian’s dreams of making Theodora his for life might end up putting her in the firing line.

Definitely a book for a mature audience and if you do not like the whole BDSM world then this book is not for you.
