I may be the villain of the story, but at least I get a leading role.

Evil is a term thrown around history and literature as if it’s something so easily definable. A concept to fight against.

Evil doesn’t exist.

Neither does ‘good.’

Vampires do, though.

I just happen to be one.

I’ve cruised through the centuries managing to avoid all the wars, supernatural and human, but still going to all the best parties.

I would say I avoided bloodshed, but it’s kind of part of the whole ‘vampire’ thing.

I’ve lived on the fringes of a society that considered cruelty and sadism favorable character traits for almost five hundred years. Now I’m in the middle of a war that might just put my nonbeating heart in a lot of danger.

Battles, I can handle.

The impossible attraction between me and the vampire slayer, not to mention the penetrating gaze of the king of our race, on the other hand?

I might not get out undead.

Book Review: ‘Bet Me’ by Lila Monroe

Synopsis:

What happens when your sex strike goes viral — and suddenly every man in town has their eye on your prize?

All I wanted was little old-fashioned romance. After a parade of Tinder disasters who think chivalry is giving me a pearl necklace on the first date, I made a pledge: until guys step up their game, this girl is off the market.

But one bottle of chardonnay later, and my drunken rant has gone viral. I’m the most famous person NOT having sex since the Jonas Brothers put on their purity rings. A men’s magazine has even put a bounty on my (ahem) maidenhead: fifty Gs to whoever makes me break the drought.

Be careful what you wish for…

Now my office looks like an explosion in a Hallmark factory, I’ve got guys lining up to sweep me off my feet – and the one man I want is most definitely off-limits. Jake Weston is a player through and through. He’s also the only one who sees through the mayhem to the real me, but how can I trust he’s not just out to claim the glory?

And how will I make it through the strike without scratching the itch – especially when that itch looks so damn good out of his suit?

The thrill of the chaste has never been so sexy in Lila Monroe’s hilarious, hot new romantic read!

Review:

Goes down as another off my 2017 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book published in 2017. Addictive reading when it comes to Lila’s books devoured this in one sitting. Sexy, sassy, humorous read. Lizzie wants romance and Jake just thinks it all an illusion so lets hope they can help each other out in that regard. Duel focus to which helps you get into both of their heads better.

Lizzie is the kind of girl who loves old movies where romance and courtship were still strong. That’s the kind of romance she wants for herself. However saying that here’s one of my favourite lines of hers: “I mean, is it so bad that I still believe there’s a guy out there who might wine and dine me, and also fuck me like he’s straight out if Magic Mike XXL?” She works as an assistant curator at The Met and is finally in charge of putting together an exhibit for the Golden Age of Hollywood. To say she is excited would be putting it mildly but she needs help finding things for the exhibit. This is where Jake Weston comes in. It’s his job to find and secure the un-findable. After a few condescending emails back and forth she pictures him as a balding man in his late fifties so she’s surprised to find a mouth watering gorgeous man standing in her doorway. One that, after she’s done drinking him in, she suddenly realises she has meet before intimately. When you get to her flashback of a drunken New Years Eve night three years before it’s amusing, embarrassing and annoying to say the least. After her break up with Todd the super rat she’s drowning her sorrows when she happens to bump into Jake – though he tells her to call him Jacob. Everything seems clearer when drinking so when a plan for revenge comes to her mind he tags along for fun. Seems the booze might be making them want other things as well, namely a drunken hook up. This however seems to be the cause of some unfortunate results, well for her anyway as he doesn’t quite umm … finish what he started? Seems he doesn’t remember her straight away and worse yet when he does he can’t think why she’d be mad at him. Trust me when he does remember he may want to sink into a hole.

Back to present day and Lizzie is back out on some bad Tinder dates where romance for them is ordering food in while watching the game. This just about pushes her over the edge. So when she’s home, a bottle of chardonnay later, she dials up to send her sister a video message. The rant she goes on is just hilarious and you’re with her all the way. She’s had enough and decides that until the men of New York up there game she’s going on strike. No sex until she gets a bit of romance first. It’s not till the day after at work when people start giving her funny looks that she gets an uneasy feeling. Seems she didn’t hit send but somehow share and now her rant has gone viral with others wanting to join in daily. Seems she’s now the most famous person not getting any.

Jake however is finding the whole situation hilarious, saying its nothing and will blow over. Plus he thinks she will crack in a few weeks, her response being you want to bet. He may think she will crack but I think he’s secretly hoping it will be with him, more so after he gets to know her better. He might start to have some competition after a men’s magazine does something stupid. Like say put a bounty on her, fifty thousand to the man who can break her strike. Now she has to figure out if the men suddenly paying her attention want her for her or the money. Well that’s when she finds out about it, before that she just sees all the attention as backwards. Instead of getting romance men just see her as a challenge. Something she can never quite get a read on with Jake. The chemistry between them is crazy hot and you can see both are tempted. More so when booze and kissing is involved – almost kissing her into submission at times. She wants to try and keep things professional but those pesky feelings keep getting in the way, for both of them really though Jakes a bit slow on the up take. He does all the romance without really knowing it and takes care of her when she needs it but she never knows if she can trust him. Does he want the bounty or her?

Loved the funny mishaps she seems to have on her parade of dates. Flying and food don’t seem to be her friends. A great bit of writing, funny banter and great chemistry between Lizzie and Jake. Attraction is strong between them and it seems second time around is the charm. Lets say when they get together its going to be worth every penny. Loved all the other characters as well as they gave the story more depth and laughs along the way.

The duo snogging didn’t bother to make room for us, leaving me no choice but to stand on the same side of the lift with Alex. With our arms brushed against one another, heat spread across my skin like a raging wildfire. The two of us snuggled close in a compact space. My hand still tingled from his touch. It was impossible to concentrate on anything other than him. He was here. Right next to me, looking gorgeous and smelling perfectly divine. All sense I had retreated from my brain as I stood there fantasizing about pushing him up against the wall and allowing him to shag . . . fuck the hell out of me.

Shut up, Ella, you dirty bird.

When the car reached the fifth floor, and the couple playing slap and tickle walked out, I stifled a moan of relief. Unsure if I was comforted due to the fact that they left or that I had Alex all to myself. I glanced at him, trying to get a sense of his thoughts. His mouth was pressed into a hard line, and his eyes remained forward, fixed on the numeric panel.

The lift came to a halt at the lobby and Alex stepped out, his head turned left and back to the right. The unrehearsed movement was fluid. He motioned for me to walk in front of him, but I had no clue where we were going.

“You lead the way.”

“All right, but keep your pace with mine,” he instructed. His voice was firm not angry.

I nodded, and did as I was instructed, keeping my stride with his as we passed through the spacious lobby. Something had changed his demeanor during the ride in the lift . . . elevator. Mentally I noted that I needed to brush up on my American English. If I intended to do business here, I should at least make the effort to know the proper terms.

Once outside, his hand reached inside his jacket pocket, pulling out his sunglasses. As we approached the valent stand, he put them on, shielding me from seeing his gorgeous eyes that reminded me of glowing golden sunlight sifting through deep green leaves.

Snap out of it, Ella. He’s your bodyguard.

Straightening my shoulders, I hauled my handbag higher onto my shoulder. I vowed to lock all my scandalous thoughts away.

“Good morning, Mr Williams.”

Mr Williams? She’s never called me that before. It’s always been Harry or Giant. That’s her comeback for me calling her Shrimp. She’s four-foot-seven, so my six-foot-three frame, towers over hers.

Spinning around, I almost swallow my tongue when I find her standing in the doorway to my office. She’s wearing a high-waisted tight fitting skirt that stops just above her knees. It hugs her body perfectly. I can see a hint of white lace protruding from underneath her white silk blouse. She looks like an angel. A sinfully, hot as hell angel. The thin red belt around her tiny waist matches her sexy red heels. She’s sex on legs, a walking fucking wet dream.

I swear I’m holding my breath as my eyes drink her in. Her long blonde hair is pulled into a bun at the nape of her neck, and the red rimmed glasses she’s wearing not only frame her beautiful blue eyes perfectly, they turn me the hell on. She has this naughty librarian thing going on and it instantly has my mind going into overdrive. I picture her releasing her long blonde locks from where they’re being held captive, and imagine her shaking her head from side to side as her hair comes loose and cascades down her lean back. I shake my head and suppress a growl as I try to bring my mind out of the gutter and back into reality. What in the hell is wrong with me? Like always, she’s playing the starring role in one of my many fantasies. This shit has to stop.

When my eyes finally meet hers, I find her smiling. Did she just witness me checking her out? Thank fuck she can’t read minds. I’d be in deep shit if she could. Having her here is going to be harder than I thought.

Clearing my throat, I tug at the tie around my neck as I take a step closer. I’m suddenly feeling claustrophobic. “You don’t need to call me, Mr Williams, Han.”

“What did your other Secretaries call you?”

“Mr Williams,” I chuckle.

She looks up at me from beneath her glasses and I’m pretty sure my heart just skipped a beat. I could drown in those damn eyes of hers. “Well, Mr Williams it is then.”

“I’d feel stupid hearing you call me that.”

“Only in the office,” she replies with a smile. “Outside of here, you’ll still be Giant, my brother’s pesky friend, or just plain old Harry.”

“Your brother’s pesky friend, hey?” I say, pulling her into a headlock.

“Yes,” she laughs.

“Take that back, Shrimp.”

“Okay. Only mildly pesky … and only on occasions.”

We’re both laughing when I release her. She’s like no other woman I know. Things are so easy around her, just like breathing.

“So now we’ve got that established, where do you want me to start?” I smile when she eagerly rubs her hands together. I like her enthusiasm.

“Come, your desk is out here.” The thought of moving her desk into my office, flashes through my mind. That would be asking for trouble; trouble I don’t need.

Placing my hand on the small of her back, I lead her out to reception. Once she’s seated, I get her to log onto the computer. “I have a conference this afternoon, I’m going to need you to make sure all the files are in order. I’ll also need you to print out copies of my presentation, for them to follow.”

“That sounds like something I could do.”

“Click on the Jensen merger file,” I say, leaning forward and pointing to it on the screen. I inhale a large breath when her fruity, yet flowery, smell invades my senses.

“Did you just sniff me?”

“What? No.” Standing to full height, I clear my throat. “Why would I sniff you?” I deadpan. Jesus. I’m starting to look like some kind of sniffing freak. In my defence, she shouldn’t smell so good. I need to get my shit together if I’m going to come out the other end of this unscathed.

“Okay. No need to get so defensive. I thought I heard you sniff.”

“Nope. No sniffing. I definitely didn’t sniff you.” I’m such a damn liar. I so sniffed her.

“Okay. You didn’t sniff me,” she says, shrugging her shoulders. “Relax. Geez. It’s no big deal.”

“I’ll email you a list of jobs that need doing this morning. After lunch, you’ll need to set up the boardroom for my presentation.”

With that, I turn and head back into my office. I need distance.

It’s safer.

Excerpt:

He finished scraping the windows with a smile on his face, and when he got in he wrapped an arm around her, pulling her across the bench seat and into his kiss. It was a strange juxtaposition of hot and cold—his skin chilled from being outside, his mouth hot against hers, his fingers freezing as they teased under her sweater inside her unbuttoned coat, heat pooling between her thighs.

She broke away gasping. “Let’s go home.”

Lance smiled, a devilish glint in his eye, like he knew exactly why she wanted to go home. He probably did. They knew each other so well, even though they’d only met six months ago. No one knew her better than him, not even Megan.

Instead of scooting back to her side of the bench seat, she fished the lap belt for the middle out of the crack where it met the back, wanting to stay close to Lance. He glanced down at her before putting the car in reverse and maneuvering them out of the parking lot. “I love you.”

She lay her head on his shoulder, enjoying the feel of his muscles working as he turned the steering wheel hand over hand. “I love you, too.”

They didn’t speak on the twenty minute drive home. Abby wanted to ask about his family’s reactions to her leaving yesterday and now him leaving today, but fear of what they might’ve said kept her silent. She didn’t want any negativity to ruin their reunion, even if they hadn’t been apart long. It felt like it had been ages since they’d been together. So talk of families, both families, could wait until they were home and fully reunited.

She could tell Lance had the same idea when he parked his suitcase just inside their door, dropping his backpack next to it, and immediately went to her, his hands going to her hips, his mouth melding with hers. She hadn’t even gotten her coat off yet, and his hands slid inside it, moving over her back, down to her ass and up her back again, this time under her sweater, his hands still chilly against her bare skin.

Her hands made a similar path over him, first up his chest, then down, pulling his sweatshirt up at his sides until her hands encountered bare skin. He broke away first, pushing back from her, his eyes glinting. “Bedroom. Naked. Now.”
