Book Review: ‘Out of the Ashes’ by Anne Malcom

Title: Out of the Ashes (The Sons of Templar MC Book 3)

Published: 1st March 2016

Author: Anne Malcom

Living a life in darkness causes the soul to char to ash. Battling demons by turning himself into a monster is the only way he can survive…the only way he can keep a grip on sanity. That grip is precarious at best, every day is a silent battle with demons that threaten to yank him into the truest form of darkness, the abyss he’ll never escape. Then it happens. Light shines through the cracks.

Happiness. Mia Spencer’s life is full of it. She has an amazing new job, friends, family, and the light of her life – her daughter Lexie. Running from the demons of the past, escaping a hell that she vowed Lexie would never know about, she worked through hardship and near poverty to create something she was proud of. Buried deep inside, underneath the swell of love she had for her only daughter, were the fractured pieces of her. Pieces that were smashed and battered when she was young and vulnerable.

Then she meets Bull, who seems to hate her on sight. He screams danger, from his huge physique, to his beautiful ink, to the motorcycle club he belongs to. He is silent, his glares threaten to burn her into flames, yet she finds herself falling for him. Finds this broken man slowly fixing the pieces she thought would stay shattered forever.

Well I knew I was going to love Bull’s story and this didn’t disappoint. Having read Echoes of Silence first I knew the gist of what was going to happen just not all the details. So glad the blanks have been filled in because wow comes to mind more than once. Might have read a couple times now already it was so good.

So we start with Mia and Lexie new in town checking out the area when someone seriously hot scenery graces their presence at the local coffee shop. Love more of the Gilmore Girl vibe back and forth between them – start as you mean to go on. Three sexy bikers walk in but one look is all it takes to zero in on our brooding man. Seems once their eyes are locked neither really wants to pull away. Eyes are the way to the soul and both seemed to have locked on to it. Chance meeting number one is good but two/three are better when they find out Mr. brooding lives across the street from them. Very handy with his hands in a time of need it seems. Meeting number four is where we see a bit more of his resolve crack. Seems he might not want to be around her but that doesn’t mean Lucky is getting a shot. Still think he’s great for a bit of comic banter when needed and can’t wait to get to his book.

Seems fate wants them in each other’s paths though – well fate and Lexie it seems – they’re like magnets with the pull towards each other too strong to deny. No matter how much Bull is trying to hide from it. One spark and they turn into the wildest couple yet – seriously you are like wow, always the quiet ones. Silent and brooding makes for one very hot biker. He’s angry with himself to begin with and doesn’t think he deserves to be happy again with someone who quiets his demons. That’s why he’s so horrible and rude to Mia to begin with. A few times you do want to give him a smack and talking to. She’s chipping at his resolve and its not long before his walls start to crack. All I’ll say is his strong arms do come in handy. He wants to keep them quite, only a night time thing which is fine to begin with until feelings get involved whether you want them to or not. But being with a biker brings its dangers. With this one you see the other side through Bulls POV and know why he – along with his brothers – would be so worried about certain things their women did.

I liked how Mia seemed to click with the other women, great to catch up with them too. Theirs is a close net family that would do whatever it takes to protect what’s theirs. Once you are in you are covered but that doesn’t mean danger isn’t lurking. With this we see what drives Mia’s protective streak and what happened in her past. You knew she would have to be running from something bad but you don’t know what. When you find out you just hope Bull can get there in time. She just has to look forward not back and hope Bull does the same. Though to her and Lexie he will always be Zane. I think he liked that his girls called him that. He just has to keep them protected with what’s coming their way.

Seriously from reading Echoes of Silence I thought Killian was the king of saying things that would make your heart melt but wow just wow Zane knocks it out of the park. He might not say much but when he does it packs a punch. Knew his would be a great story and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. Can’t wait for the rest of the series – love it!

Title: Found Underneath
Series: Finding Me #2
Author: K.L. Kreig

It began as a ruse.Take a girlfriend. Divert the press from the fucked up mess that’s my family until my father is re-elected. Stage a public breakup. Move on.

Only that brilliant plan went straight south the moment I set eyes on Willow Blackwell.

I found her.

My center. My future. A soulmate with the will of a mule and the mouth of a harpy.

I now want things I never wanted before. Permanent kinds of things.

Only Fate—and her ex—have other plans for us.

In some sort of cosmic impossibility, our lives unknowingly intersected years before when tragedy befell both our families. Once the devastating truth is finally revealed, the future I’d found in her will come crashing down around us and for the first time in my life I’m completely helpless.

I may very well lose the only woman I’ve ever loved to a past neither of us saw coming.

Author Bio

As a USA Today Bestselling author, I write stories that are deeply emotional with flawed characters, because humans ARE flawed and if we read about perfect characters living in their perfect world, first of all, snoozer, but secondly, we never experience the gratification of redemption.

Outside of writing, I’m just a regular ol’ Midwest girl who likes Game of Thrones and am obsessed with Modern Family and The Goldbergs. I run, I eat, I run, I eat. It’s a vicious cycle. I love carbs, but there’s a love-hate relationship with my ass and thighs. Mostly hate. I like a good cocktail (oh hell…who am I kidding? I love any cocktail). I’m a huge creature of habit, but I’ll tell you I’m flexible. I read every single day and if I don’t get a chance…watch the hell out. My iPad and me: BFFs. I’m direct and I make no apologies for it. I swear too much. I love alternative music and in my next life I want to be a bad-ass female rocker. I hate, hate, hate spiders, telemarketers, liver, acne, winter and loose hairs that fall down my shirt (don’t ask, it’s a thing).

Book Review: ‘Taming a Maverick’ by C.M. Owens

Title: Taming a Maverick (The Sterling Shore Series Book 11)

Published: 8th May 2017

Author: C.M. Owens

Just some fun. Just one night of reckless, harmless, wild fun.

That’s what I told myself the night I hooked up with quite possibly the sexiest guy I’ve ever known. Only, I didn’t want to KNOW him. Life is a series of temporary situations, or so it’s always been for me. A future revolves around the next move, but I’m still the type to live in the moment on a seldom occasion, consequences be damned.

Unless that moment happens to be unknowingly landing in bed with my brand new stepbrother. The universe is a mean, twisted jerk. And one consequence is that I have to be around him and get to know him. The worst consequence is the fact that Maverick Sterling, the infamous playboy who can’t possibly be tamed, is really hard not to want more of once you’ve had a taste. So long as I’m not stupid enough to fall in love, it shouldn’t be a big deal. Right?

My life has been blissfully simple for a really long time. I have a routine. I have friends. I have family. Yet everyone seems to have less and less time, since they’re all sort of trying to be adults or what the hell ever. I blame them for the fact the only girl to ever ditch me without a backward glance is suddenly under my skin. I blame my father for the fact she’s a new fixture in my life. Not that I knew that before I got a little overly friendly with my new stepsister. I mean, what are the odds? It shouldn’t have been possible.

But it happened. It figures the one girl I can’t get out of my head is the one girl who doesn’t want to be with me. At least in my head she’s the only girl who doesn’t want to be with me, because I tend to be arrogant like that. The point is, now she’s everywhere I turn, yet she’s marking a line in the sand that she thinks I really won’t cross.

Obviously she doesn’t know me at all.

Oh my sweet lord Maverick is awesome. I love him so much. Knew his story was going to be good but this knocked it out of the park with what came. Who would have thought that Mav would be the most romantic and easiest to fall for? Things I love about this book #monopoly #bananas #piemoment #warmup

So Salem is in a new town but knows it won’t be permanent due to past experiences with family problems due to her mother’s relationships. For just one night before all the crazy comes in she wants a night of fun and after one look she’s found just the guy for the job. Hunter becomes the prey it seems. Though after one look at her outfit it doesn’t take long for Mav to make his move. Talk about fast work for the pair of them, so its good they seem to know where they both stand. Passion ignites for a fast bit of fun. Though Mav insists it was just a warm up so he’s none too pleased to find his beauty gone before he’s done with her. Shouldn’t worry too much though as fate has worked its magic. After a broken phone call from his father a few days later he goes to check out their beach house – one that just happens to have a hot squatter inside of. One he knows a little too well it seems and after the bombshell that gets dropped, one he maybe shouldn’t have gone near – his new stepsister. What are the odds right? Though we’re so glad it happened because fun antics are on the way for sure.

A sure fire way to make sure they stay platonic now is to become friends as Mav insists he doesn’t hit on friends – yeah well we know that won’t last long for both of them. The thing is the longer they hang around each other the more they both want something more which puts them in a bit of a tricky situation. A deal is struck so one thing is off the table for now but Mav’s counter is brilliant. They suit each other perfectly and when she cracks you are right with her. Mav the hero it seems with stepping up to help Sean when the time comes – a shirtless Mav love it.

Salem and her younger brother Sean are the only ones that followed their mother to a new place due to her new marriage. Its all part of a system that they go along with, wherever Sean goes Salem will follow, she is the only one bringing warmth into his life where their mother only brings coldness. Her other brothers when they show up are great with their cameos but Sean is by far the star. He is like Mav 2.0 and when they spar its like Mav is talking to his younger self. Brilliant banter, could listen to it all day. Note to self though Maverick – do not under any circumstances let people use your phone. Twitter is fun though! Great running theme throughout with the tweet chats. Love his mum and aunt when they start chatting away on it. One sure way to make Mav cringe away and others laugh their heads off. Be wary of lending phones is all I will say.

With the other books in the series a pattern forms where it’s usually the guy that does something stupid to mess things up. Not saying Mav doesn’t do a few things (funny as they are) but I’m glad this one went a different way. That being said my heart broke a bit near the end. Love that this one linked in more of our Triple Dare and Break Even guys and girls. Ruby, Corbin, Brin and Rye are great and the pranks and dares we see are brilliant. You also get more links in with the group as a whole as we are almost at our final stop with the wedding we have been waiting for. Before that though we are going to get a cracker, I can feel it. Can’t wait for Britt’s story. Thinking I will be laughing throughout just from the preview at the end. Teasers are good but it just makes you want the next one that much more. Side note: loving the fact that we are going to be getting a bit of a spin off with Connor. Sports Romances are so in right now.

Book Review: ‘Strays’ by Emma Kendrick

Title: Strays (Red Kings MC Book 1)

Published: 4th May 2016

Author: Emma Kendrick

Twitter: @theemmakendrick

Best friends Jackie and Tyler set out on an adventure to find somewhere to call home, hoping to escape the violent city life and settle down in a quiet place where they can make something of themselves. What they find instead is the notorious Red Kings Motorcycle Club, outlaw bikers that rule the city’s criminal underground.

Only able to avoid them for so long, the unsuspecting pair get thrown into turf wars and drug trafficking before they can even figure out what’s happened. And as Tyler is dragged deeper into the club’s illegal activity, Jackie remains stuck in limbo as she tries to resist the pull of one Dean Rockwell, the MC’s most dangerous member.

Torn between the tight-knit family of bikers and the safety of a normal life, can Jackie navigate the treacherous new waters without losing herself and her best friend? Or will a series of unfortunate events lead her down a path that she can’t come back from?

Goes down as another off my 2017 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book with a car chase in it. Slow build action packed start to a series that has plenty to expand with.

Jackie and her best friend Tyler have been friends for years but act more like siblings. Wherever he goes she will surely follow. They seem happy enough in Macon but lack of other friends and a good job are taking their toll on Tyler. This all changes after a loud conversation between them is overheard by the local MCs. Seems Tyler has some skills they could use and as he already has the bike its not long before he finds what he’s been looking for. He might be happy with the change that’s coming but Jackie is taking it a bit harder. Her first introduction to the MCs, specifically Dean, wasn’t the best. Fear is forefront on her mind and it seems he has no intention of changing how she sees him. He’s the member others fear, the one that gets things done without much of a conscious. Doing whatever it takes to protect the club and its family, even if that means to kill.

Jackie only saw him threaten someone but never knew exactly what he did for the club. On some level turning a blind eye while trying to become something close to friends. They start to get closer after he sees her drawings and asks her to do something for his bike, its personal and he’s the only one she does it for. She seems to have caught his eye but it’s not till hard liquor is involved that things spark to life. Jackie needs a distraction while Tyler is off on his first run and with Dean being the only one there you know how it will go. There has been chemistry bubbling below the surface for a while and now it’s coming to the surface for a one-time thing. Seems once isn’t enough and before long they can’t get enough of each other. But with getting closer the clubs President starts to worry Dean will lose focus on what he does for them. Can’t very well have his killer going soft so you know something will come along to shift the dynamics of everyone. Twist comes along with the shift and soon its Jackie keeping secrets from those around her. Won’t be long before everything comes out but with Dean showing his true colours you’re not sure how things will turn out. Secrets will cause problems but its dangers from others that put people – especially Jackie – in harms way. Can these bikers keep those they care for safe or will they cause more problems?

Found the scene with Dean on the phone to his mum while doing something with Murphy amusing. Nice calm conversation while they are digging a hole. Can you guess what might go in there? A lot of characters were introduced within this one, from those in Macon and then another charter in Lakeside. Paving the way for the rest of the series but with names flying around you may get lost. A few key ones that stood out for me were Nash, TJ, Murphy, Jagger and Bianca the Queen of Lakesides MC President who takes no shit from anyone.

Comical at times, danger at others, an interesting friendship with Jackie and Tyler and then the hot and heavy then cold chemistry thing that’s going on with Jackie and Dean. Seriously at times he can be a dick so lets hope he can counter it with being something more for Jackie.  Series has lots of potential for where it could go next, whether to focus on the MCs of Macon or Lakeside. Either way will be a fun ride with these badass bikers.
