Synopsis:

When the family dog trots in with my diaphragm in its mouth—in front of my date, his parents, and his adorable little girl—you would think I’d hit rock bottom.

WRONG.

Let’s back this up a sec…

Brendan Daniels is the sexiest man alive. The captain of the Badger’s NHL team is also clever, kind, funny, and was my good friend…until we cruised out of the friend zone one weekend with a red-hot fling. Come Monday morning, I wanted to keep riding the Big O train to happy town, but Brendan wanted someone who was “stepmom” material.

A.K.A, not me, apparently.

The problem? I’m crazy in love with him and his daughter. So when he asks me to be his pretend girlfriend for a long weekend with his former in-laws, I say yes. We’re still friends, after all, and friends don’t let friends fake it alone.

***

Laura Collins is the last woman I should be thinking about taking in the back seat of my car, in the woods behind my in-laws’ house, or in a hotel room where we’re sharing one very small, very squeaky bed.

I need a steady, stable influence for my daughter, not a fling with this too wild, too young, too impulsive red head. So what if she’s beautiful and intense and passionate and has the biggest heart I’ve ever known?

I don’t want to fall in love. I really don’t. The whole “pretend girlfriend” thing was supposed to solve my problems, buy me a little more time.

But when it comes to Laura?

Hell, maybe I’m just not cut out for faking it.

Review:

Goes down as another off my 2017 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book that takes place in the winter. Laura and Brendan sure find some fun ways to warm up after having some fun in the snowy landscape.

So after reading Hot as Puck I had a very good idea of who seemed to cause Laura’s heartbreak and it was none other than Brendan. A summer weekend of passion that could have turned into something a hell of a lot more. Love how it starts with Laura burning all her underwear. Goodbye bra you served me well! Seems this would be the moment pain in her PR butt Brendan would appear. He seems to have caught her at a bad time but after hearing some home truths on how she thinks he feels for her. Hate being top of the list as he always finds ways to be as unhelpful as possible with PR stuff. He decides to show a bit of solidarity with burning something of his too. Burning underwear aside they are both on a beach at sunset and he sure knows how to comfort her quickly, giving her plenty of time to back away if she wanted to. Seems they needed a push to get there but once they do its like they just click. It’s been hard for him being a single dad after losing his wife three years before and it turns out that Laura is the first person he’s been with since. Once isn’t quite enough though and soon you can feel it turning into something more the longer they spend together. Which is why it comes as a shock for Laura when – after she puts her heart out there – he knocks her back saying it would be too complicated with him being a single dad, as Chloe needs to come first.

So its back to being friends/work colleagues but you can still see the strain after months apart and now it looks like Brendan is about to test that friendship to the limits. Seems his ex-in-laws think he should have moved on so Chloe would have a female influence, knowing their daughter would have wanted him to be happy and not be alone. With his hectic career they might get the idea to have Chloe stay with them so she is in a more stable environment. (Side note: loved the ex-in-laws, they were a hoot). So his idea is simple, he needs to turn up for Thanksgiving with a girlfriend in toe. He just needs to convince Laura to be that girlfriend. He knows he messed up on something great and for stupid reasons it seems but he is willing to correct it. Laura is wary to help as she’s not sure how much her heart can take but it doesn’t take long before she agrees anyway. Pretending to be the girlfriend of the guy you completely fell for can’t be too hard can it? Well kissing seems to be a way to relax but lines might start to blur between fake and reality. Both might want the reality but they have a few crossed wires to sort out. Good job nosey siblings are always there to help.

That dog sure knows how to create an embarrassing situation for Laura. OMG I was dying when she got on the floor. That’s a sure way to confirm a relationship – you will have to read it to see what I mean. Its not long before the fake reality becomes the real thing and once it does its like they have four months to catch up on. Seriously this guy is packing some heat and stamina. Who could resist? But his head seems to be running away from him and get well ahead of Laura’s. You can totally see why she would react the way she did. Two people so suited for each other but they have to remember there is a third in the mix.

Chloe was a cutie and I loved her text chats with Laura. Loved all the text archive chats really as it gave a different feel to certain parts. Love how the epilogue of this one links up with Libby’s. Those girls are going to have a surprise for each other the next morning. Also nicely linking in Brendan’s feisty sister Diana with the next hockey hunk who will grace our lives. These boys sure know how to heat up the ice. Another great read but I’d expect nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars

I received this ARC from Give Me Books for my honest review.
