A game between friends…

Just friends.

That’s all we are,

All we ever were.

But when I finally let myself go,

Let myself really feel,

The only thing I want is him.

Despite how opinionated, frustrating, and charming he is,

We’re only friends.

He’s my player number two.

But lately, we’re powering up,

Trying for more,

And playing this game just might destroy us for good.

She deserves better,

Better than the game-less douche who gets to have her.

She’s strong, feisty, and so damn smart.

Too smart–if you ask me.

And now, I’m amped up for more,

Ready to play this game,

With no “game over” in sight.

“You ready to meet my people?” I ask.

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” he shrugs.

Yay, he seems really into this. Wonderful.

I grab his hand and lead him to the back room. When we enter, I notice that the table I just vacated is deep in conversation. As we walk to the table, I can’t shake the feeling of being watched. But no one at the table even notices us yet. As we approach, I hear them talking about the publishing house courting Dex about a book deal.

“Hey guys.” I get their attention. Morgan and Gia have big smiles on their faces. Dex and Simon on the other hand are assessing the newcomer.

“This is Mason,” I go around the table and introduce him. Before I’m done with introductions, Bernie pops in between the guys and introduces herself too.

“So, you’re the sports guy,” Dex says, assessing.

Mason laughs it off, “I am. You’re one of the video gamers, I take it?”

“Sure am.” Dex still doesn’t ease his slightly scrutinizing demeanor. They make small talk for a bit. The girls trying to lead the conversation away from the tension the guys are throwing out. Don’t get me wrong, I’m flattered. I suspect this is exactly how my own brother would act right now. But while they are just meeting him, Mason and I aren’t new. I’ve been dating him for a while. It’s not like I don’t know him.

Simon excuses himself to get some refills for the table and as soon as they return, Link appears at the table. He doesn’t sit though, he stands. I could swear he’s puffing out his chest.

“I’m Link. You are?” he shoves his hand out for a shake.

Mason slowly takes a drink before making eye contact with him, making Link wait as he lowers his cup to the table, and grasp his hand.

“Mason. Ruby’s boyfriend.”

Link brings his other hand around and slaps Mason’s back, “Ah. Well it’s great to finally meet ya, Mace. I’ve heard almost nothing about you!” They drop each other’s hand at the same time I hear someone beside me snort.

“It’s Mason,” he corrects.

Link just blows him off, pulls over a stool and starts talking his ear off. I mean, I guess this could have gone worse. Amber, who I didn’t notice before, sits next to Link looking bored out of her mind. Dex and Morgan excused themselves to go chat with their parents. And it seems like the rest of the table are enjoying talking to Mason.

“So, do you plan on working for ESPN or SportsCenter some day? Like, is your gig with WTSL just a stepping stone or are happy where you are?” Bernie asks. She’s adept at keeping the conversation going. She’s also got mad interviewing skills.

Mason snaps out a laugh, he looks a bit annoyed with the line of questioning. Which baffles me since he usually loves talking about himself.

“Well, I have what you call a career. A real job. So yes, I have long-term goals,” he replies.

“Excuse me?” Link and Simon say in unison.

“Well, correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t you just play video games all day?” he asks.

“Among other things, yes. But I get paid probably three times more doing what I do than you could even imagine. It’s a real fucking job,” Link bites out and damn, he sounds pissed. I’ve never heard him so angry before.

He laughs. Mason actually has the audacity to laugh right in their faces.

I gulp. I’m afraid to look at anyone but Mason right now. It’s clear that our nice, “getting to know the new boyfriend time” is over.

“Right,” he drags out the word. “Well, I guess we will just have to agree to disagree then.”

Link growls and I risk a glance his way. But, I’m not prepared for what I see. He’s not staring down Mason with fire coming out of his ears, ready to attack. No. My throat catches at the sight before me.

I’m absolutely embarrassed. You know when you’re a kid and you do something bad, and instead of your parents saying they are upset with you, they tell you they are disappointed? It makes it so much worse. That’s how I feel right now.

He’s looking at me with disappointment in his eyes. He holds my attention and I start to say something, to try and fix where this conversation just went. But I stop. He gives a quick jerk of his head. He clears his throat and pushes off of the stool.

“Well, I think that’s our cue to leave. See ya around, Mace.” Link looks to his left to where Amber is collecting her phone and purse. Somehow she still manages to look bored. He motions a quick goodbye to the entire table, avoiding my gaze entirely. Then he walks away.

You could cut the tension with a knife when Simon stands and turns on his heel. He stalks towards the table where Morgan and Dex are sitting. Gia shoots me a pleading look as she follows him. Bernie sits stock-still, worry sketched on her face.

I start to speak, but Mason beats me to it.

“Well, that went well. They all seem alright, but I’m not sure I like the cocky asshole.”

William enrols in the Preparatory Course of magic, where he learns more and more about the hidden abilities of his Magic Feather, which is also a real living being with a memory, a personality, and an incredible power. Author Interview:

1: Tell us a little about yourself and what got you in to writing?

When someone asks me to tell about me, I suddenly remember all 30 years of my life and don’t even know where to start. I can say that I worked in the hospital for a couple of years, often saw people die and some day I realized that I wanted to talk to people about miracles, about life and that there is not a single person whose life would be something insignificant and unimportant. Each person, his life is a full storyline in which he is the main character, he has problems that he is trying to solve every day, there is a love line and even enemies. That’s why when we write a storyline for a story, we write about all this – because of all of this is our life. Our every day. Every morning we wake up and try to change something in our life for the better, to become happier. But, each of us fails (and often!) And this is normal! That’s how life works. This is its essence – that we do not just receive good things and good people, but deserve them, fight to receive them – after all, the process of struggle also turns us into winners. This process teaches us life and makes it more viable. And this means that giving up means denying yourself any chance of winning.

As you can see, I like to talk about it. That’s why I decided to become a writer. I want to talk about it in the language of my stories through my characters, to inspire people to overcome difficulties and get out of them as winners! To inspire them to live, and do it as energetically as possible!

2: Do you have a favourite time and place where you write?

Time and place do not matter to me. I write only when there is nobody around me and when it is quiet. Only in this way I can hear the voice inside me.

3: Where do your ideas come from?

I believe that we are like flash drives! And if we manage to connect to “Heavenly Google”, then we can “download” from there “data” into ourselves and share these “files” with other people. So, I do not think that the thoughts that come to visit us are generated within us. All we have to do is relax and connect to “Heavenly Google”, where everyone can upload only what they like. Einstein “downloaded” the Theory of Relativity from there, and I – the story of William Calhoun.

4: Do you have a plan in your head of where the story is going before you start writing or do you let it carry you along as you go?

I always say that the real writer does not invent the whole story. His task is to simply invent a plot and determine for himself the rules of the game in the plot.

For example, a protagonist can do this and that, but he is not able to do something else. After all, this is how everything happens in our life. We can’t drink the Atlantic Ocean, or lift a finger to the Empire State Building. We all have weaknesses and shortcomings – and this is normal. And even when we write a fantasy story, we cannot make the main character omnipotent, because otherwise, he will not be like us, since he will not have weaknesses. And to me personally, such a protagonist is not at all interesting.

So here. When we come up with an interesting event, we place the main character in this event and set the rules of the game for ourselves, after that the writer has already finished his work and the detective should be awakened in it! Sherlock Holmes! Because at this stage the investigation process begins: the writer asks himself “Why did the characters get this way? What were his motives for doing this? Why is he making the only way out of the situation?” The author should not answer these questions on the principle “Because I want it so,” no. On the contrary, he, as well as his reader, then impatiently weighs all the facts, keeps in mind the rules of the game, which he asked and finds the only logical way to continue. Yes, sometimes the author may not like the way events unfold, but these are his problems. His task is to follow the plot and be logical. This is the most interesting thing in the process of writing a book, since the author is looking forward to finding out how it will end and he is constantly looking for “evidence”, “footprints”, “interconnection” – this is wonderful.

I love to write books. And therefore, we can say the next: if you start writing books, but you still do not get to the “Investigation” process, it means that you just manipulate the plot and make it be what you want it to be. And your book will turn out to be just a subjective point of view, and not an independent story. In fact, your task as soon as possible is to turn the plot into a living organism, into an independent being, and after that with an interest to follow it and say to yourself: Wow! I can not believe this! I absolutely love it!

And then, believe me, your readers will be delighted too.

5: What genre are your books and what drew you to that genre?

Fantasy, mysticism, and somewhere even horror. I believe that everything is possible in our life. And therefore, when I write fantasy, I do not think that I am writing something that is impossible in our life. Otherwise it would be boring. I like to think that we don’t know much about the world in which we live. And indeed it is. And if this is so, then each of us can tell others about our own vision of what secrets our world holds. And the fantasy genre gives the writer this opportunity.

6: What dream cast would you like to see playing the characters in your latest book?

I wish I knew…

7: Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors?

By the age of twenty, I had read over 2,000 books. I counted because I wanted to break my father’s record. )) And you know, when I read all these books, I did not even notice that they brought me up. And at some point, I became what I am. Thanks to the books. Different books!

8: What book/s are you reading at present?

I am reading the second book about the adventures of William Calhoun, because I am writing it now. ))

9: What is your favourite book and why?

My favorite book is Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. This book teaches that there is nothing impossible in the world. You just need to really want to. And when I read this book, I thought: «I think I’ll miss you, Jonathan» ©
Great book!

10: What advice would you give for someone thinking about becoming a writer?

It’s simple. Books should be written only in case it makes you truly happy. Then your readers will be happy too.

11: What are the best Social Media Sites for people to find out about you and your work?

For the time being, I am just forming an online platform for the fan base of my book. Everything is in process, but you can subscribe to my Facebook page to follow updates.
