1: Tell us a little about yourself and what got you in to writing?
I don’t remember a life without books. My love affair with books began early in life and I found solace in libraries, bookstores and between pages. Writing seemed to be a natural extension of this love. Word play is fun, and seems to run in the family. My grandfather was a storyteller. My mother is an author. Perhaps it’s in the genes or blood, but it’s also definitely a part of my heart.
2: Do you have a favourite time and place where you write?
Morning writings seem to have a nice flow, but I write almost anywhere and at any hour. Sitting down with a hot cup of tea and tucking myself in with word-making is a personal joy. I’ve found that the more I can bring a component of play into my writing routine the more the muse seems to want to join into the activity. I’ve also made it a habit to carry a pad of paper and a few pens with me to collect thoughts and ideas as they arrive.
3: Where do your ideas come from?
My first book, The Ultimate Guide to a Multi-Orgasmic Life was the culmination of my transpersonal psychology graduate thesis work. Over the years I have become a go-to media expert in my field. I noticed that journalists were asking for answers to similar life topics, mostly around ways for humans to reduce stress and enjoy life. My new book, The Happy Human Playbook: A Practical Guide to Healing Body, Mind and Emotions With Joy and Pleasure offers a bevy of ways for people to enjoy life, and to have better relationships with themselves, others, and life.
4: Do you have a plan in your head of where the story is going before you start writing or do you let it carry you along as you go?
I actually took a year after writing my last book to just sit with it. I knew it held the answers so many humans were seeking, but I also felt like the timing was off. The world changed a great deal over that year, and I knew that the book needed to be restructured to adapt. There’s nothing like taking an entire book apart and reconfiguring it. But in the end it was an infinitely better guidebook because it allows readers to access wellness tools and practices they may need the most at a given time in their lives. So all of the hard work hopefully paid off.
5: What genre are your books and what drew you to that genre?
My books are non-fiction, inspirational and motivational guidebooks. I was a personal development blogger for many years. It only made sense for my writings to eventually become resource books.
6: What dream cast would you like to see playing the characters in your latest book?
This doesn’t apply to my nonfiction, but I have fantasies about my books ending up in certain hands. I know that there are certain celebrities who would love and appreciate what I have written. May they find my books! 😉
7: Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors?
I read voraciously, but I read far more research than I do books these days. My mind is insatiable, and I like to keep up on the latest studies in my field. Most of the books I read are also for research purposes. But I also occasionally curl up with a good piece of fiction. I enjoy self-discovery books like those by Sue Monk Kid, Pirsig and Paulo Coelho. I enjoy fantasy, classic sci-fi, and a full range of chick-lit and beach reads.
8: What book/s are you reading at present?
Woman of Light by Kali Fajardo-Anstine, Where Good Ideas Come From by Steven Johnson, a book by the late Wayne Dyer and an unpublished mystery manuscript a friend of mine wrote.
9: What is your favourite book and why?
Oh, I don’t like to play favourites. Ha ha
10: What advice would you give for someone thinking about becoming a writer?
Write. Write every single day, without judgement. Just get words down, then return to your work refreshed to do the real work, which is editing. The more you write the stronger your skills will become. It also helps to read, I think. Absorbing great literature expands your mind’s ability to word-make, in my humble opinion.
