Synopsis:

A relationship experiment that lets experts find your perfect spouse? Sign me up. Sounds great, right? I thought so, too…until I saw a rock star waiting at the altar for me.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL PARTNER:
Caring. Hard-working. A devoted family man, loves kids.
Clean cut, funny, smart, quiet, but a good communicator.
~ Asia Jenson

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL PARTNER:
Independent. Tall, blonde, sexy. Outgoing. Intelligent, neat. Unslutty. Confident. Loves to travel. Committed.
~ Talon Valentine

A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT.
The concept was scary but exciting…
Marry a total stranger.
Live together for six months.
Journal everything. (Feelings. Fights. All of it.)
After six months, we each get $50K in trade for our journals, whether we stay married or not. But the goal is to commit to the experience and see if the relationship experts could put together the perfect matches.
I have never been lucky in love. This was my chance to find my soulmate.
I couldn’t wait to meet the man the experts felt was perfect for me.
My hopes were immediately dashed when I saw him at the altar.
Shit. I married my worst nightmare.
Right?!

** This story is not a reality show. It’s a serious social experiment run by a psychologist and it’s all discrete. The characters are not on TV or followed around with cameras. They are alone. This story is a lot more than it seems **

Review:

Goes down as another off my 2018 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book over 400 pages. I loved every one of them. So this book revolves around a social experiment to see if relationship experts and psychologists can be used to find someone the perfect partner. Married at first sight to a stranger, what could possibly go wrong? Or maybe that should be so right? Once married you have to live as couple for the next six months, writing and video chatting with the professionals about your experiences along the way. At the end of the experiment you have a choice, you can stay married or divorce. It also comes with a 50k compensation bonus for each at the end no matter what you decide. Four couples are matched and have very different results. So let’s see how Talon and Asia match up and if theirs can be the one made for life.

Describing what you think your perfect partner should be and getting it are two very different things. Talon might be used to having women fall at his feet – the beginning kind of gives that away – but he is about to get a shock from his new wife who not only has no idea who he is but also states that he’s not really her type, well not yet anyway. She’s not his either, to start with that is, but this experiment goes deeper than superficial looks and it seems the ones in charge got it right with Talon and Asia. You might not have put them together to start with but sure do they go. Let’s see if they make it through the wedding night to see what comes next.

Asia is very unsure of herself to start with so keeps thinking that their marriage has a sell by date from day one. Which is something that really starts to piss off Talon. They are married now and he has every intention of making it work or at least giving all he can get. He just needs her to trust him so she can feel the same. He has a few vices that she has strong views on though – alcohol and getting high top of the list – that might cause some issues. Her past also has a strong impact on her present and only when she starts to open up do they connect on a deeper level.

This time round it wasn’t an insta love situation as intimacy is definitely not at the top of Asia’s mind with her new husband. She needs to trust first before going further so they can grow as a couple and Talon needs to learn how to win her over in a different way. It’s what he wanted; it’s just a bit harder than he thought. The hook ups were getting old and he just wanted someone to want to be with him rather than the idea of him from the band. The whole #cocksure band tag being something he wanted to change. His new wife might not be who he would have picked but he isn’t going to let this chance slip through his fingers without trying. She’s his now and the longer they are together the more he sees his true future – one she is very much a part of. Loved the connection that slowly grows between them as you can see them creating a base to start something on. Love the nicknames Tally and jelly bean, think they really loved them too.

Now Asia might have thought her new husband wasn’t her type – tattoos, strong build and long hair – but the longer they are together the more tempted she is to want to touch. Well he is her husband so she is allowed. More so after catching him in the shower where it seems he was using her as inspiration to get a happy ending. Seems the stories about size might need a recount as far as she’s concerned. It’s like he is teasing her with what she could have but not rushing her. She holds back to start with but only when she lets go and claims him as her own does she get the connection they were both chasing. Hot, hot, hotter when things finally get going, shame they don’t run smoothly for long with his part in the band coming into play. Seems he forgot to mention, or rather just forgot in general, that they would be away on tour for a month, right after only being married for two, and partners aren’t invited. After finally connecting to be separated so soon is hard for both of them. She knows there are women who might throw themselves at him but needs to learn that she is all he wants now. Knowing and believing are two different things.

Her past comes back to cause tension in their bubble of pleasure and calm. It doesn’t help when trouble starts brewing for Talon too. With what happens you feel so much for him and what he goes through with how he copes/doesn’t cope. Seems Talon was quick to judge on the basis of something he shouldn’t have seen and Asia needs to fight through barriers put up that would keep her back if she wants to keep what’s hers.

Learned a little more about Asher and his life but not much, enough to want you to delve more. Need a book with him now I think, though I do love catching up with the other guys, especially Storm and Lukas. All the books seem to revolve around each other so it’s fun to see different sides and points of views of similar events. I also like the animal aspect that seems to run along with these books and the little cat Princess Pixie was perfect. Who knew cats and rock stars would be an online hit.

Review:

Goes down as another off my 2018 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book you heard about on Goodreads. Three books in and I’m starting to get a bit addicted to these men. They have tortured souls with darker pasts and are just want to find the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully right next to the woman they want to keep forever.

Ivy gets a shock when picking up her phone hearing her husband Paul say how much he’s missing – and wanting to fuck – someone else. Seems he wanted to have his cake and eat it – dick! The nerve of that guy, you just wanted to slap him, repeatedly. Swiftly leaving it kind of puts Ivy in a bit of a head spin. She is now a 36 year old single mum of two kids – Macy 17 and Tommy 7 – not knowing where to go from there. Seems her friend has a few ideas, namely by getting on someone new. Next ideas are for Ivy to do all the things Paul didn’t want her to. Top of the list being getting a tattoo and with her friend having a winners voucher with a well-known tattoo artist she all but throws it at her to make sure she goes for it. All she goes for is a tattoo but what she gets when she sees the guy whose doing it is a feeling like lightning hitting her with a spark a mile high. She may be getting more than she bargained for.

Lukas is an old soul in a young body, very well toned young body mind you. He’s creative too with all his tattoos and piercings. A body canvas that Ivy wants to never stop staring at. Well when he’s not looking because he’s far too young for her – well that’s what keeps going round her head. Seems Lukas felt the same spark she did and can’t wait to get his hands on her – for the tattoo that is, well maybe more if he’s lucky. With the design he’s done she will have to come back a few times and it doesn’t take long for him to question his own rule about not dating clients. He can tell she is shy but beyond cute in his eyes and with him being such a good listener doesn’t take long to figure out what she might be afraid of. Mainly being hurt again and also their age difference. She might by nervous and shy around him but he isn’t one to give up on what he wants and from the moment he met her he knew she was it.

The chemistry between them is so strong it would be impossible to miss. Once she finally gets the age thing out of her head and gives them a chance she starts on one fun full ride. Talk about heat just getting hot, hot and hotter! Now Lukas can be the sweetest guy at moments – driving all the way to hers to give her a hug because she said he gives the best and she wanted one – but other times it’s like a beast has been unleashed and she just holds on for the ride of her life. They are slowly starting to build something real but you know things are never going to go completely smoothly. Especially with an ex who suddenly realizes he doesn’t like the idea of her being happy. Think he wanted her to be a hermit forever after he left – again complete dick! Then you have her kids thrown in the mix. Tommy was sweet, you just loved him, but just when you think you have a clue about what Macy is like she throws you a curve ball. Ivy and Lukas just need to believe in each other to keep what they have. Soul mates playing a part in bringing them back together when the time was right. Age is just a number and when Ivy and Lukas are together it becomes irrelevant around what they truly have.

I liked that this one intercepts with the other stories so far but also made me sad, as I knew what was going to happen to Vandal. The ending kind of threw me a bit and got me thinking. Are they really never going to tell?? That would be a big can of worms waiting to pop. Also what’s up with those black feathers and how come Asher is always the one to help the women see things a bit clearer? Interesting series so far so on with the next I say. Talon’s should be good but I do want to know more about Asher, he’s very mysterious to me at the moment.

Book Review: ‘Vandal’ by Carian Cole

Synopsis:

She takes my breath away; she is so beautifully damaged.

Yes, I had broken her, ravished her life and destroyed her happiness.

I brought her to the ultimate despair.

I was responsible for all the pain and suffering that now brought her to her knees in front of me.

Broken.
Hopeless.
Reckless in her agony.

She is a mirror of my own tortured soul.

But what I took away I can give back, in ways she cannot even begin to imagine.

She is everything right in all my wrongs.

She loves me. She needs me.

She has no idea I’m the one who wrecked her life.

** Can be read standalone, but is part of an interconnected series **

** Vandal is a dark romance with light BDSM. He is emotionally damaged and manipulative, but still wants love. This book deals with death, grief, deception, substance abuse, depression, and graphic sex. If this is not your thing, you can skip this book and move onto the next in the series and you will not be lost. Vandal is not the sweetheart that the other guys in Ashes & Embers are – but even the dark and damaged deserve to be loved, right? **

Review:

Goes down as another off my 2018 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book you can finish in a day. A darker story that starts with a tragic accident, one where you feel just as broken as Vandal does when he wakes from it.

We saw a bit of Vandal in Storm but here he takes centre stage where you see just how far he falls after a car accident that cost the life of his daughter Katie, one he was driving. It’s not just his life that was changed forever after that fateful night but also the life of his passenger and the car that they hit. Three lives lost and two broken people struggling to survive in aftermath of it. To say he goes to a dark place after would be putting it mildly. He is falling and not letting anyone help pull him back out, well he doesn’t think he deserves it anyway. At this time the rest of the band are trying to let him grieve but his behaviour months after are causing concern. They need to give him time but with a tour coming up they know he won’t be ready. He needs to regroup and can’t do that around others so plans to go to his mountain retreat to be alone. Well alone is what he first thought but things take another turn. On one of the times he visited his daughters’ grave he noticed another griever. A woman so distraught he almost felt jealous that from loving someone so strongly she could mourn them that much. He gets more of a shock after they leave and he takes note of the grave she was in front of. More importantly to the date on it, the same one as his daughters. He has a name and knows he needs to confirm his gut instinct, which turns out to be true. Thing is he then starts to look into the life of the woman left behind and starts to get a bit obsessed. He can see from her social media accounts how much the loss has changed her and has a gut feeling that he can help. He didn’t know he was going to do it until he saw her again at the grave. He had a teddy for his daughter but decided to give it to Tabitha instead. Then asking if she wanted to go for a ride.

Tabitha had been living in a dark hole with no way out for so long after the death of her husband that she just needed to feel something, anything else. Or more importantly not have to think about it, just let someone else do it for her. So when a stranger asks her to take a ride she longs to be taken away from everything. She doesn’t really know what to expect but even if it ended badly she would at least feel something. What she gets is something very different. Taken to a remote cabin in the mountains you would almost be thinking it could be the start of a murder mystery but this is nowhere near that. Her mystery man seems to know what she needs even if she doesn’t so she just lets go, letting him take the lead and take control.

Vandal knew the moment that he had her alone that he needed her and more importantly that she needed what he could give her. It might start out as one crazy hot night but when he suggests she stay the month that he was going to things start to grow in a different direction. He wants her to let go of control and become his submissive, something she finds a bit hard to do at first. He may be a broken man himself but he wants to take control of her so she can heal without thinking. He has a need to fix her and get her back to some resemblance of the woman she was before. No matter how hot they burn together it doesn’t take long for things to start getting complicated.

A mountain escape from reality where they created a bubble neither wants to break from. But in reality their time together is a ticking time bomb until they really let the other know what drew them together in the first place. They are connected by an accident that tried to pull both survivors down but somehow together they can mend and try to rebuild something new. Tragedy brought them together but it could also tear them apart when everything comes to light. Lies, deceit, grief and love but who is the one really keeping secrets in this dark tale.

The other band members’ pop up but mainly Vandal’s brother Lukas – can’t wait for his book next. Evie, Storm’s fiancé, pops up too and is the reason that a cute blind kitten called Sterling gives Vandal, and Tabitha, a reason to smile again.

The people we love are thieves.
They steal our hearts. They steal our breath.
They steal our sanity.
And we let them.
Over and over and over again.

They say you never forget your first time.
Mine was with a homeless musician who effed my brains out under a bridge.

He was my first love. And sixteen years later, I still can’t get him out of my head.

He broke all my rules.
He also broke my heart.

I watched him climb to stardom, cheering him on from afar.
But I was never a fan; just a girl in love.

Like a tornado, he spiraled, leaving a path of destruction in his wake.

But love conquers all, right? It has to. Because here I stand, ravaged and ruined, needing it to be true.

You can’t go back, but I want to. Back to the bridge. Back to when he sang only for me. Before he was famous. Before he shattered my heart.

I thought I knew everything about him.
But I could not have been more wrong.

He promised me every tomorrow. And here I am, waiting.
And hoping.
Again.
