Synopsis:

If you’re a guy like me, and you find yourself having banged your sexy new boss–the school principal–in the back of your Jeep one drunken night, here’s a few takeaways based on my experience…

Lesson One: Always get her FULL name.

Lesson Two: Consider asking what she does for a living.

Lesson Three: Find out why she’s moved to town. Get details. Details are crucial.

Lesson Four: Don’t alter her bio in front of an auditorium of high school students unless you know she has a sense of humor for that sort of thing.

Lesson Five: If you ignore Lesson Four, apologize instead of flirt when you’re sent to the principal’s office.

Lesson Six: NEVER sleep with her again.

Lesson Seven: Pay attention to this one–it’s the most important of them all.

Don’t fall for your one-night stand.

Class dismissed.

Review:

Goes down as another off my 2019 Bookworm Bingo Challenge – A book published this year. Welcome to tranquil town of Lake Starlight where the Baileys are a well loved family. What’s more loved though is the towns gossip blog site Buzz Wheel. Read it fast though because it’s only up until midnight. Note to self: if you want to do something a bit impulsive – like hooking up with a stranger in a jeep – make sure no-one is around to capture the story or you might make a headline. Something that Austin and Holly are wishing they had done.

Austin is kind of seen as a bit of a saint in Lake Starlight. After his parents died he came back to help raise his brothers and sisters. His sister Savannah, only a couple years younger, would take care of the family business and he would look after the family. His main goal was to see all of them graduate school and go off to college. The last two, twins Phoenix and Sedona, are coming up to graduation and with this his own dreams are coming back into focus. He is the school coach but dreams bigger to be a college coach. His plan is to leave to pursue his own dream career now everyone has graduated. The only problem is that his dream will take him away from Lake Starlight. Is it time for him to chase a new dream though?

Holly has her own reasons for coming to this quiet little town and that’s due to who lives a few towns over – her father. Well father would imply that he was a part of her life but at this point he is simply part of her DNA. She wants to meet him but are her hopes a little too high for what she might get back in return? To do this she managed to get a job at Lake Starlight as the new school Principal until the end of the term. All would be great if she didn’t get a very embarrassing introduction to the schools pupils courtesy of the school coach wanting to get a laugh out of them. What makes matters worse is that he isn’t a stranger but in fact her one-night stand from a few days before. Shocked faces from both it seems when he sees her walk towards the front of the stage. I think they are both running through the last time they saw each other – namely the back seat of his jeep. Heated passion about hit the breaks?

Breaks are pushed down hard, as both know that the other doesn’t plan on sticking around for long – three months and then both will be gone. Holly might be clear that she doesn’t want anything to happen between them because of this but you can’t hide away from the chemistry that they feel. The town carnival is where things heat up. Pie in the face is ok if you promise to let to other clean you up afterwards. But a ride on a fairest wheel is the perfect way to build tension with every time you are out of sight from prying eyes. You can feel the heat rising between them with each rotation getting closer to kissing. They know what it feels like too with memories of the jeep – thought they were going to combust! Seems they think that if they go in with their eyes open and just keep things fun and secret – not wanting to get back on Buzz Wheel again – that they will be ok when its over in three months. Yeah good luck with that when feelings start creeping in!

Holly’s mum Karen was a bit of a whirlwind. Knew she’d be fun right from the get go. Loved Grandma Dori too and found she always had a few good words of wisdom – along with a handy golf cart – at just the right time. So the Bailey clan have arrived and I feel are going to be an interesting bunch to follow. Anyone else going to be steaming up jeep windows or are they just going to leave that to Austin and Holly. Well they are a very passionate, fiery couple.

Fun, interesting characters throughout that draw you in quickly. The town has a great vibe to it to. Makes you want to visit it.

5 out of 5 stars

Release Blitz: ‘Rock Rebel’ by Tara Leigh

Rock Rebel is now available!

“Tara Leigh has written her best Nothing But Trouble Book with Rock Rebel.”

~Musings of the Modern Belle

SYNOPSIS

He’s a rock star with a secret, she’s a pop princess with a painful past – can their forbidden romance survive, or will their lies destroy them both?

I’ve earned my bad reputation.

A few years ago, I was New York City’s hottest classical music prodigy. But I wanted something else, something more. So I chased my real dream, and now… I’m rock royalty. Dax Hughes, lead guitarist of Nothing but Trouble. But to my family and former Juilliard classmates, I’m an outcast. A misfit. A rebel.

They’re not entirely wrong. I don’t give a damn what other people think, and I’m all for breaking the rules… except when it comes to our new opening act, Verity Moore.

Rock gods don’t tour with pop princesses.

It’s not personal. Actually, under that fallen diva reputation, Verity’s incredibly talented. And her fiery redheaded personality is… intriguing. But I’m convinced the skeletons in Verity’s closet are as scandalous as my own, and when we’re not sparring, she has a way of drawing out all those secrets I’m determined to keep hidden.

Yeah. Verity Moore is definitely off-limits . . .

But since when do I give a damn about the rules?

Money. Status. Wealth. Power.
I believed I was entitled to all of it.
My legacy.

Jolie Chapman.
I thought I was entitled to her, too.
My love.

In a scandal that set our families against each other, I lost.
My legacy.
My love.
Everything.

I was heir to a throne built on lies, my crown forged from corruption.
Stripped of everything I’d been raised to consider my birthright.
Including my princess—who wasn’t mine, after all.

I’ve spent the past decade rebuilding my life, on my own terms.
Money. Status. Wealth. Power.
They’ve been earned.

Now I’ve returned to Manhattan for redemption, too.
Jolie wasn’t supposed to be here.
… And I wasn’t supposed to care.

Screw me once, shame on you.
Screw me twice—
Who am I kidding? I don’t believe in second chances anymore.

Excerpt 1 (conflict) 500 words

“What are you doing here?” Jolie’s voice had sharpened, words like bullets aimed my way.

At this point, I didn’t have a goddamned clue. “I live here.”

“Here, in New York?”

“As of a week ago. Your face is on a billboard right outside my apartment.”

She backed away, in the opposite direction of the open ledge, putting several feet between us. A lock of hair fell over her cheek, briefly shielding her expression from view. When Jolie turned my way again, any trace of vulnerability was gone. “And you decided to . . . what? Maul me, for old times sake?”

“Not sure that’s the word I would have used.”

“Really? What would you call it then?”

My gut twisted. The one that came to mind was mistake.

I didn’t realize I’d said it aloud until Jolie chimed in, her lips curving into a counterfeit smile. “We can agree on that, at least.” The dismissiveness in her tone made me want to throw her over my shoulder and carry her back to my place. Kiss away some of her confidence, feed off her needy moans, spank the sass out of her.

“Listen,” I exhaled a sigh, raking stiff fingers through my hair, “what we had—”

“Is behind us. We were kids.”

“Right.” I forced the word through my mouth, making liars out of us both. The last few minutes had proved our past was still very much a part of our present. “But there’s something . . .” Untangling my gaze from hers, I searched for the right words.

Clearly impatient for our interaction to be over, Jolie interrupted again. “No, Tripp. There’s nothing. Not anymore. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I really have to get out of this make-up.”

Did she have to make this so fucking hard, dismissing what we had like it was nothing?

Of course she did. She was Jolie Fucking Chapman. Difficult was in her DNA.

I pulled out my phone. “What’s your number. I’ll—”

Her eyes blazed. “What? Text me?” A bitter laugh scratched at my ears as she spun on her heel.

Against my better judgment, I followed her to where a mirror and table had been set up in front of a director’s-style chair. Jolie was settling herself into it, a woman coming at her with an open jar of thick white cream. “Give us a minute.” I snapped, just before she’d submerged her fingers.

The girl slapped the lid back on and flounced off. Jolie gawked at me. “For god’s sake, what else is there to say?” There was a tremble in her lower lip, the slightest flutter of her chin. Emotions way too close to the surface for her comfort.

Or mine.

Sending a glance skyward, I raked agitated hands through my hair. “Look, what I want to tell you isn’t about us.”

Jolie crossed her arms over her chest, a self-protective gesture. “There is no us.”

Release Blitz: ‘Birds of Paradise’ by Anne Malcom

Today we have the release day blitz for Anne Malcom’s BIRDS OF PARADISE! We are so excited to share this new title with you—be sure to grab your copy today!

Title: Birds of Paradise

Author: Anne Malcom

About Birds of Paradise:

I was trapped in the house with a man that had meant to kill me. Might very well still mean to kill me. But not by locked doors, force, or ropes or chains. Not physical ones at least. The man who very well might kill me gave me the impression that he wanted nothing more than for me to walk out that door.

I was not his captive.

I was my own.

I could very well die here. If there was anything left worth killing.

If there was anything left in me that wanted to live.

He collected dead things, after all. And with every day that passed, I found myself wanting to stay, even if that meant I was part of his collection of dead things.

Especially if I was part of collection.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Is it done?” the disembodied voice on the phone asked.

He slammed the door to his house, surprising himself with the violence behind it. He was a violent man by profession, by necessity. Not by nature.

“It’s done,” he lied. Another necessity in his profession, lies. They, like blood and bullets, were his bread and butter. Though he only lied to targets. Or people he had to go through to get to targets. It was as easy as killing at this point. And killing was as easy as breathing.

But not to the people who paid him. There was no need to lie to them. It would not be fiscally responsible. It was unnecessary. And dangerous. Especially considering this particular client.

A life of lies was easier to unravel than a life of truth.

That’s why he lived invisible. No truth. As few lies as possible.

But here he was, breaking whatever passed for rules in his life.

For her.

“Good,” the voice said.
He poured himself a vodka.

“The money will be in your account. It’s been a pleasure working with you, Brat.”

He took this as goodbye and then hung up. He didn’t do pleasantries.

Especially not with this particular client.

He had majorly fucked up.

He’d never done that before.

Never.

And now it was because of her. The pathetic, broken and weak woman who was devoid of terror, of self-preservation, of dignity.

He sipped his vodka.

No, not quite devoid of dignity, he thought as he wandered to the black oak door off his personal library. The one hidden away at the end of the house, not the one boasting grandeur and wealth, something the original owners of the estate had been overtly preoccupied with.

There had been a quiet dignity about her. In her acceptance of her death.

He walked through the room, opening the door hidden in the bookcases. The light went on, dimly illuminating the frames that cluttered the intimate space.

He made his way to his favorite specimen, running his fingers over the glass thoughtfully.

She wasn’t beautiful. No, something stopped her from being simply beautiful. Her dull hair, sallow skin, dry lips. The lingering scent of death and sorrow that followed her. That was attached to her. That had whittled her down to the nerve, making her almost painful to look at. But her eyes, violent against her gray skin. They kept him from finishing her.

Was that what stopped him from completing it? That painful gaze?

He inspected the creature beyond the glass.

Or was it because he’d found something to add to his collection? Something rare? Something that likely didn’t exist in high numbers in this world?

He didn’t quite know what she was, but she was somehow unique.

He might yet kill her. It would be the sensible thing to do, before word got around to the right ears.

It would be smart to do so.

He sauntered to the leather chair in the middle of the room.

“Yes, it would be smart,” he muttered to himself, glancing at the dead things on his wall, imagining her completing the room with her frozen and trapped beauty.

He wasn’t done with her, that was for sure. He couldn’t be, even if he wanted to be. She was a complication. A loose end. He didn’t do loose ends. Or complications.

Her death would be simpler.
