Book Review: ‘Hidden’ by Madison Johns

Title: Hidden: Clan of the Werebear

Published: 12th May 2014

Author: Madison Johns

SEPARATED…Elaina had heard warnings about the Clan of the Werebear all her life, but as a foundling with no knowledge of her past, she has no idea whether or not her protector’s warnings that they are searching for her are true.

PROTECTED…The werewolf, Samson, tries to protect her from the world by hiding her away in a cabin high in the mountains, refusing even to allow her to “shift.” But when, at the age of eighteen, Elaina is stricken by “the mating fever” and Samson finds her in a compromising position with his grandson, he is forced to confine her even more.

FEVERED…Restricted, hidden away, in full frenzy of the mating fever, and strictly forbidden to mate, Elaina decides it is time she joined her own kind…to find her mate. But meeting the devastatingly handsome were-bears, Cullen and Damon, is dangerous because she is drawn to the both of them …like a bear to honey. The fever is so strong, all she can think about is being in their arms.Torn, Eliana must face one of the most difficult choices of her life: go back with them to their village and chance that they aren’t part of the Clan, or turn her back on the one man who could be her perfect mate in order to remain…HIDDEN.

Hidden, Clan of the Werebear is part one of a serial that is 23,778 words in length. It contains adult content and is not intended for anyone under the age of eighteen.

Review:

When you have been hidden your whole life for your own protection how long before you start to question the reasons.

Elaina has always been told that she needs to keep hidden to stay safe as there are people after her. Samson, a werewolf, has tried to raise her as best he could but with her being a werebear there is only so much that he can do. There are changes coming that are out of both of their controls that force her to make a choice, whether the right or wrong one is still to be seen. Running away when she is in the midst of the mating heat is not the best option as there are others around that would take one whiff and want nothing more than to claim her, if only for a night. Case in point when she stumbles across werebears Cullen and Damon.

Cullen and Damon seem to have it good in their little hareem in the woods. They are the only two males left to protect the women. The reward for such protection seems to be in the form of mating with them, both of them. That is their offer to Elaina for her to stay. If she wants protection then that is the price. The mating heat might be to blame in part but she doesn’t really see this as too much of a price, not that she is willing to say that to them that is. The pull might be strong but that doesn’t mean that they trust her, or the secrets they know she is keeping. Her true past might be catching up to her, putting everyone at risk.

Short read that was ok but I would have liked to know more about the Clan of the Werebear to see what the danger is really meant to be. There isn’t much of an ending, though that seems to be the thing with stories split into parts, you have to finish them all to get the whole picture.

Book Review: ‘Lost Alpha: Part 1’ by Jessica Ryan

Title: Lost Alpha: Part 1

Published: 5th May 2014

Publisher: Jessica Ryan Books

Author: Jessica Ryan

Blurb:

Between her cheating boyfriend and her obnoxious brother, Paige Strong is in dire need of an escape from her miserable life in Oklahoma. During a routine drive, Paige gets more than she bargains for when she hits a very naked, very sexy stranger.

Travis Bowshot is a lone alpha seeking vengeance against the vampire that destroyed his pack. He doesn’t have time for a human female, no matter how much her curves tempt him.

But after Paige’s mundane life crashes into his, Travis can’t deny the attraction between them, and it’s only a matter of time before he can no longer control his instincts to mate.

Lost Alpha: Part 1 is a 16,500 words werewolf/BBW romance with a little bit of action and mystery sprinkled in. It is the first entry in the Lost Alpha series. This serial contains strong sexual themes and violence. It is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Review:

Werewolves I know but wererats?! Now that’s a bit strange but no less freaky when they attack. Travis is out on a hunt when tragedy strikes. Howls in the air calling for help as danger attacks. By the time Travis gets there it’s too late, he is all that is left of his pack. A new alpha with no pack but one thing on his mind — revenge. He will do whatever it takes to track down the ones responsible for the attack. Rage fuelling him while he tracks one of those responsible wasn’t the best course of action as his concentration wasn’t all there. Case in point by the fact he gets knocked down by a car. Can his luck change with the one that hit him?

Paige isn’t having that good of a day either with walking in on her cheating boyfriend. The drive home takes another turn when she hits something. Finding a naked man on the road is the last thing she needs. Stranger still the fact that there is black fur trapped in her bumper. Taking him home is her only option with him being out cold but with what he later reveals, and his general attitude towards certain people, she may have wished otherwise.

A story split into parts so this is really just a teaser to get you interested to continue reading. I think I would have liked to just continue as one book but it wasn’t too bad as it stands. Setting the scene with the characters and what they have coming their way now certain people have been entwined. Paige and Travis clearly have chemistry but a lot of pent up frustrations are bound to cause issues. Her brother Billy was a bit arrogant and ex Randy a complete dick. Fun shifter read that leaves you wanting more.

Can two stubborn wolf shifters let down their guards long enough to take a chance on love?

Lone wolf Caleb Jackson is only back in town long enough to sell his late father’s house, and the bad memories with it. He never expected to find his mate.

Good girl Mia Blake never behaves badly. Except for the time she shifts into her wolf, chases a stranger through Olcan Hills, and has the hottest sex of her life on the forest floor.

He has no desire to settle down. She is afraid to upset her family. But, with someone determined to destroy Caleb’s inheritance, and his secret fling with Mia getting hot and heavy, moving on isn’t as easy as he’d hoped.

Can either of them let down their guards long enough to take a chance on love?

Review:

Talk about animal attraction. Hot and heavy right from the get go.

Seems Mia and Caleb’s wolves were more in tune with what they wanted than their human halves. A lonely howl into the night calling for something, she doesn’t really know what, only to get a howl back from another. Equally lost and wanting a connection. The wolves found a counterpart and once their human sides come out to play pulses soon start racing. A chance encounter to be free without having to see them again. Not so much as Mia gets a shock with finding out who her playmate was.

Caleb is back in town sorting out the family home and estate after his dead beat dad has died. Hoping to be in and put quick doesn’t go so well with the place being trashed. Handy a cop is on hand to check things out. Blast from the past with Rory being said cop, and the new alpha in town. He wants to get the person responsible and help out with clean up, roping his sister in for good measure. Nice surprise for both when she walks in his door coming face to face with the wild wolf she had a lot of fun with in the woods.

She may want to forget, thinking many won’t approve of her actions or choice, but her body doesn’t want to play ball. Spends too much time thinking about how others see her that she lost her strength to be able to be herself and act like an adult, not the baby of the family they all need to take care of. Chemistry between them is sky high. No matter how many times she plays the push pull thing with Caleb they still crave each other too much to stay away. Can they both get out of their heads enough to see what they want is right in front of them? Ex’s always seem to play a part in causing trouble and hers is beyond petty. Sweet ending and I liked that it didn’t just revolve around Mia and Caleb but brought in Rory and Naomi (Mia’s boss). A new relationship perhaps? Love found in the hills of Ireland for these shifters I feel

Prospect Springs Shifters

Paranormal Shifter Romance

Sheriff Jonathan MacSweeny is in charge of keeping the peace in Prospect Springs. Frontier living isn’t what it used to be. It’s hard to survive in the New Old West and it’s even harder when your area doesn’t exactly embrace supernaturals–and you howl at the moon. That being said, he’s good at his job and has a reputation with the ladies. When he learns his childhood sweetheart is to be married off to the town sleazebag, he goes in guns blazing to see to it she’s his. Problem is, Molly isn’t the same girl he remembers from ten years prior. Now she’s a gun-toting, foul-mouthed, vixen with a badge of her own.

Special Marshal Molly Cogan never planned to set foot back in Prospect Springs. When her friend gets the harebrained idea to steal her identity in an attempt to protect her from the bounty the outlaws have on her head, Molly finds herself standing right smack dab in the middle of chaos–or home in her case. It isn’t long before Jonathan is there, flashing that famous MacSweeny boy smile and tempting her in ways she wasn’t prepared for. This heart-hardened Marshal has her work cut out for her if she plans to face her past fears and her past sweetheart.

Review:

Doesn’t fit into one genre but many with a little bit of everything. Futuristic, post apocalyptic, shifter paranormal, western with some hot and heavy passion thrown in for good measure.

When Jonathan learns Molly is coming back to town and about to be married off by her father to the worst person possible he knows he has to stop it to protect her from the monster Gerald is. He seems to just be winging it without much of a plan and only his brother and cousin for back up. Good job he didn’t really have a plan because once he gets to the bar it would have been thrown out the window anyway when outlaws turn up seeking vengeance against the one he wants to save.

Turns out our girl Molly can take care of herself. Away for ten years after a very traumatic event she came back stronger and sharper than any of them would have thought. She is now a Special Marshall who takes out wanted paranormals and it seems the ones that don’t like this have put a bounty on her head. When outlaws turn up at the bar all hell breaks loose, more so when ‘her’ Jonathan gets caught in the crossfire. She may think him lost but the secret he carries might just come in handy with keeping him alive.

Even with bullets flying being close together after all this time can’t stop the hidden passion coming to the surface. Just got a few things to sort out first. Check list: outlaws to take care of, recovery, binding yourself to someone, breaking a married contract, that sort of thing. So not too much then!

Took a little while to get my head round what kind of era it was set in but in the end I just went along for the ride. A bit of hot fun that has a lot of asskicking to keep you entertained. Would have liked more of a comeuppance for certain characters but that might come later in series. Supporting characters were interesting and main ones had some chemistry.
