“I can’t get over how big this place is.” Tris’Tyn’s voice broke Bash’s sexual fantasy starring Freya.

“It’s huge, so large that you’re not sure how to deal with all of it.” A grin flashed on Freya’s face. Bash scowled at her choice of words as memories of the first time they made love surfaced. She’d never seen one in person before and worried he wouldn’t fit. He’d proven that theory wrong.

“It’s nothing like the Resistance camp I came from.”

“That’s because they weren’t the Resistance.” Bash growled as he raised an eyebrow at Freya.

“I meant to ask what you meant by the ‘real Resistance’.” Tris’Tyn’s gaze bounced to her.

“You don’t have to worry about that anymore. You’re with us now and soon we’ll strike the final blow to ARI and the Sovereign. Then everyone will be free.” Nova interjected with a glare at both Freya and him. Busted.

After Tris’Tyn and Nova got off the lift, Freya grinned at him. When she straightened from the wall as the doors opened at their stop, Bash swooped her up into his arms then tossed her over his shoulder. It brought back memories of the first time he’d done it at the safe house where they’d stayed right after they met.

“Are you serious right now?” Her fists pounded against his back.

“Sorry, not sorry.” He didn’t hold back the laugh. “But if you want to give me a massage, my lower back is a bit tight.”

She slapped his ass before giving in. Just like last time, there was only so far she could go without hurting him and he knew she wouldn’t risk that.

Placing his hand against the wall to reveal the bioscanner, he remembered it was unnecessary. All he had to do now was imagine the door opening and his nanites used the wireless communication system to pass the security codes and open the door. Another thought sealed the door as he tossed Freya on the bed.

Scrambling to sit up, she glared at him. “Was that really necessary?”

“Not in the slightest, but it was fun.

“Going somewhere, firecracker?”

I slapped my hand over my heart, trying to catch my breath and curb the wave of adrenaline shooting through me, as I looked up into the mesmerizing slate-gray eyes of Cole Taylor.

“Fuck, Cole,” I choked. “Couldn’t you have knocked?”

“So you could hightail it out an alternate exit? I don’t fucking think so.”

I went to reach for my bag, but he kicked it away across the carpet.

“Cole, stop it!” I cried, rushing over to it.

His large hard grasped my wrist, stopping me. I tried to jerk free, but he was too strong. He leaned down, grasped my hips and dropped me in the middle of my queen-size bed. As I scrambled to right myself amongst the over-abundance of pillows arranged neatly on top of the purple silk sheets, he climbed on, crawling up my body until he straddled me. With barely any effort, he had me incapacitated, his big hands confining my wrists, his thighs trapping my legs.

“I hate you!” I screamed, bucking beneath him in a fit of frustration.

“If only that was true. It’d make things easier on both of us.”

I stilled. “Is that want you want?”

He squeezed his eyes shut.

When he opened them again, all I could see was pain. “Don’t drag me down that road again, Tasha.”

How could I not? “I’m sick of being stuck in this… limbo.” I blew out a breath. “You either want me, or you don’t.”

His free hand slid deep into my thick, raven hair as he leaned in closer, his eyes boring into mine. “You know how I feel about you. But, you also know that, after what you did, it’s made it impossible for me to bring you into my life, to make an official claim on you.”

“I explained things to you and you accepted it.”

He leaned in closer, his gaze drilling into mine. “Slade wants your help,” he said, blowing past my comment entirely. “That’s why I’m here.”

“I can’t.”

“I haven’t even relayed the details yet.”

I turned my head to the side. “You made a wasted trip. I can’t, no matter what it is.”

“What are you so afraid of, Tasha? I’ll protect you. You know that. Fuck, if you cooperate with him, Slade will protect you with everything at his disposal.”

“Like he was able to protect the love of his life?” I snapped vehemently, his comment about protecting me hitting a nerve. Didn’t he get that it was the other way around? I was protecting him.

As usual, Cole snapped to Slade’s defense immediately. “He was utterly blindsided back then. Way younger and inexperienced. He’s been through a lot, done a lot, since then. He’s no fool. The guy knows his shit. No one’s been able to come at him and live to tell the tale since.”

“Too little, too late,” I muttered.

His eyes narrowed, hating the dig at his almighty president, the disrespect I was demonstrating. Talk about an extreme case of hero worship. Slade Mitchell really could do no wrong in Cole’s eyes. The asshole had him wrapped around his little finger. And, damn, Cole Taylor was a hell of a formidable soldier to have at his side. His reputation was something else. He was as much revered as he was feared. I didn’t doubt that Slade had been well aware of that when he’d brought him into the Steel Titans fold.

“Fuck,” I groused. “Just get off me and get the hell out.”

He didn’t move or give an inch.

“Cole!” I cried, thrashing beneath him and trying to break his hold. It was useless. He was an impenetrable force. All power and hard muscle.

“Stop moving,” he ground out.

I took him in. His jaw was tight, his body majorly tense. His expressive eyes were flashing in warning.

Oh.

Instead of doing what he asked, I ran with the opportunity he was unwittingly offering up, making the decision to poke the proverbial bear, rather than to sate it. I had to get him off me. I had to get him out of here.

I held his heated gaze as I undulated beneath him. His breath hitched as my pussy rubbed against his dick. His rock-hard dick.

“Tasha,” he cautioned.

I grinned.

And then I played to his weakness, sweeping my tongue over my top lip, slow and sensual.

“Fuck,” he groused.

My plan to push him far enough so that he’d bolt away backfired spectacularly when his mouth crashed against mine.

I choked from the sheer ferocity of it.

His hands left my arms and sank into the depths of my thick hair, grabbing fistfuls of it.

He tugged it roughly as he ground against me, grunting and rutting like an animal and delivering a hard, punishing kiss.

I was so overcome by the explosion of intensity, that I lost myself to it for a good few moments, my good sense leaving me when I needed it the most.

Against every protest from my body, I managed to get a hold of myself, pressing my hand to Cole’s chest and easing him back enough to break our kiss. “This is a bad idea.”

He scoffed. “Bad idea?” He licked my neck, making me moan out at the delicious feel of his hot tongue teasing my skin. “That’s what we’re all about, firecracker.”

God, it’d been weeks since I’d held him against me, weeks since his talented hands and mouth had tended to my body, weeks since his impressive cock had satiated me in the way only he could. I wanted him so badly. I craved that connection with him. I was desperate to lose myself in him, to forget that it could never really be, that we could never really be. It was a fantasy of another life, for versions of us that weren’t caught up in our twisted worlds, worlds that couldn’t reconcile one another.

He was right. We were a bad idea. When we came together, when we were wrapped up in one another, consumed by our hunger for each other, it always felt so right. But to the outside world, we were… wrong. We didn’t belong.

And I didn’t want that anymore. I didn’t want to be his dirty little secret.

Excerpt:

Tears dashed down Clare’s cheeks as the carriage rolled toward the castle. Her teeth grated and her knuckles whitened as she gripped the toy soldier her brother had given her. To watch her. Protect her.

No one could protect her.

The storm broke and rain hammered the city, pelting loudly off the canvas roof of the carriage. It was only late afternoon but the storm cast the city of Iden into premature darkness. Clare thought of the blue-eyed soldier, drenched on his horse. Let him be wet. He’d been sent to ensure she didn’t run away. He deserved some misery.

A shout rent the air and the carriage lurched to a stop, nearly throwing Clare from her seat. Screams rose above the drumming rain and the agonized shriek of a horse pierced through the chaos. A chill raced over Clare’s skin, lifting the hairs on her arms and neck. The crash of metal striking metal echoed through the street.

The carriage was under attack.

Her heart kicked in her chest and her breathing spiked. She let out a strangled cry when something heavy—a body?—crashed into the side of the carriage, rocking it. The same adrenaline she’d felt when the princess had been ambushed rushed through her, and Clare grasped the door handle with a trembling hand. She wouldn’t wait in here to be slaughtered.

Clare crouched behind the opening door, using it as a shield as she dropped to the ground. She was grateful for the braided crown that kept her long hair out of her eyes; the sheeting rain did enough to blur her vision. A tall building rose directly in front of her, the thin opening of an alley only several paces away. The soldiers fought in front and behind the carriage, struggling against men with dark cloths tied around the lower halves of their faces. Even at a glance, Clare could see that the masked attackers horribly outnumbered the uniformed guards.

“Get back inside!”

Clare jolted at the shout, looking to the blue-eyed guard. He stood mere paces away, twisted toward her, expression hard as he gripped his sword. Rain soaked him, darkening his sandy hair and sluicing off his face and shoulders. “Get inside!” he repeated.

A masked man popped up behind him, raising his sword for a deathblow.

Clare’s heart seized. “Look out!”

The bodyguard whirled, ducking as he spun. He avoided the attacker’s blade and slashed up with his own, the two of them exchanging blows too quickly to track. Rain flew off the swinging blades, but Clare didn’t stay to watch. She bolted for the nearby alley, abandoning the carriage and the brutal fighting. She launched herself onto the narrow street, rain stinging her face as she ran. Beggars huddled against the alley walls, a feeble shelter from the storm. They stared as she darted past and one even called after her.

Escape. She needed to escape the danger and—

Escape.

She nearly stumbled. She could actually escape. She could run home and grab her brothers. By the time the king learned of her disappearance, it would be too late. And, thanks to the king, they had enough food and coin to make the journey possible. They could leave Devendra and her oath. Forever. She didn’t have to be the princess’s double.

It was a split-second decision, but Clare embraced it. She reached the end of the alley and turned left. Away from the castle, back toward home.

The street was crowded with people hurrying to escape the storm and Clare plunged through them, ignoring the bruising elbows and curses flung after her.

A scream shattered the normalcy of the street and Clare twisted a look over her shoulder. Her stomach dropped.

A masked man with a drawn sword shoved through the crowd, heading for her.

Author Interview:

1: Tell us a little about yourself and what got you in to writing?

Hi! I’m Heather. A little about me… I re-watch Lord of the Rings frequently and my favorite room in my house is my library. I have always lived in Utah, but I love to travel—some of my favorite countries I’ve visited are Italy, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany. I’m the second oldest child in a family with ten kids, so I grew up identifying with the Weasleys! I learned to read when I was four, and I have always devoured books. And even as a young kid I’d write short stories and entertain my younger siblings with made-up fairy tales.

I grew up in a small town with a small library, so by the time I was 11 I was running out of books to read. That’s when I thought, “You know what you like in a book. So write it.” And I did. I thought it was my masterpiece, and I finished it when I was 12. It was 240 typed, single-spaced pages. And I was so sad when I typed THE END, because I’d had so much fun with it, and I’d poured all my ideas into that one book. Then, of course, I realized I hadn’t used ALL my ideas, and so I started writing my next book. By the time I was 18 I’d finished 9 novels and had started 23 more, plus I had about a hundred other ideas jotted down in my notebooks. That’s when I decided I should probably take my writing seriously 🙂 I published my first book, Seers, when I was 21, and I feel so blessed that I can live my dream!

2: Do you have a favourite time and place where you write?

I love writing in the morning, because I feel like my creative energy is really active then. I write best in my office with soft music—usually soundtracks. Hans Zimmer is a favorite.

3: Where do your ideas come from?

I get inspiration from a lot of places, including other books, movies, and even things I see in the news. It might be a character trait or a problem that catches my imagination, and then I start asking “What if” questions, which inevitably lead me to a new story.

4: Do you have a plan in your head of where the story is going before you start writing or do you let it carry you along as you go?

I never have all the details. Even when I try to outline, it never fully works 🙂 To start writing, I need to know the main character and the problem they’re facing. While brainstorming that, I figure out the setting, other important characters, and the main storyline. I know the end goal (even though sometimes details are hazy) and usually a twist or two. As I write, characters make decisions and details fall into place, and a story is born.

5: What genre are your books and what drew you to that genre?

I write mostly YA, and fantasy is my favorite genre. Castles, swords, dragons, magic, princesses, thieves, assassins—that’s the stuff I loved as a child, and I guess I haven’t really grown up because I still love it. I love being in a different world, whether it’s urban fantasy, paranormal, or a new world entirely—with or without magic. I also include strong romance elements, because I’m a sucker for a good love story.

6: What dream cast would you like to see playing the characters in your latest book?

This isn’t the fun answer, but I’d really like to see a cast of unknowns so we can see new talent!

7: Do you read much and if so who are your favourite authors?

I read voraciously! Favorite authors are hard to pick, because I really have so many. But some are Mary E. Pearson, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Sarah J. Maas, Marissa Meyer, and Ilona Andrews.

8: What book/s are you reading at present?

I’m currently reading “Serpent & Dove”, by Shelby Mahurin, “Maybe We’ll Remember”, by Amanda Luzzader and “Sapphire Flames” by Ilona Andrews

9: What is your favourite book and why?

Oh gosh, I hate this question. There are so many amazing books, and so many different genres! I often give the, “Whatever book I’m reading right now” line. But, today I’ll say “The Darkest Star” by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I love so many of her books, but that one blows me away. I’ve re-read it several times because, well, Luc 🙂

10: What advice would you give for someone thinking about becoming a writer?

You’ll face moments when you will doubt yourself, your skill, your book—but you cannot let those moments stop you. Let your dream be stronger than your doubt. Do not give up, even when you face rejection. An author is a writer who didn’t give up. So keep going. Believe in you!

11: What are the best Social Media Sites for people to find out about you and your work?

I love to connect with readers and fellow book fans! You can find me via your favorite social media platform below:
