Money is my mistress.

Solving problems, my trade.

Until the tables turn, and trouble finds me.

Now on the run, I need a plan.

But not before I’m blindsided by a pain-in-the-ass stranger.

Maggie.

Curves, startling blue eyes, and she hates me.

I don’t trust her and with good reason.

My plan is simple: use her.

Then I kiss her. Touch her.
Crave her.

She was my way out, now she’s my downfall.

Prophet is a full length, standalone enemies-to-lovers romance with a HEA.

With less than three feet to the elevator, the doors roll open. Relief floods my veins, cooling my hot, churning insides, but the feeling withers when long legs, curves, and tumbling raven locks consume my vision.

Maggie.

My insides are atomic, hot and fracturing into a million shards of emotion.

Anger slices my gut like a blade. This woman keeps popping up at the most inconvenient times.

Confusion.

With her long cornflower-blue dress and leather jacket, hands laden with grocery bags, she is so out of place amidst the chaos.

Unease. I want her gone with a blink of an eye. Guys with guns are breathing down my back, and she’s now in the line of fire.

Resentment.

What if she isn’t in harm’s way but also here for me? There’s no evidence to suggest she’s carrying out orders, but it would be a mistake to dismiss the idea.

My competing thoughts only make it harder to concentrate. I’ve got bigger problems with Drago’s men gaining on me.

I dive for the elevator, shielding her and we crash to the floor. I may not trust her, but I won’t have her blood on my hands. And if she’s here for me too, then I’ll deal with her.

“Get off me!” She pushes at my chest, oblivious to the danger.

I jump to standing and press my finger on the close button. Two Russian behemoths run our way, surprisingly fast for their size.

“Oh my God!” Her eyes widen at the guns aimed at us. “Shut the door!”

“What the fuck do you think I’m doing?”

My finger threatens to snap at the pressure I have on the button, and I prepare to fight if they get in the elevator.

The big guy on the left pulls the trigger and the bullet hits the wall. Her scream pierces the confined space and she wedges herself into the corner of the tin can.

Terrified eyes bore into me as if I’m shooting at her and the elevator doors slide closed, separating us from the men.

I sink to the floor and rest my head on the wall for a beat or two, struggling to gain composure. It’s short-lived with the heat of her savage glare burning my skin.

She slides her back up the wall, using it for support. “What the hell is going on? Why are they shooting at me?”

Her frenetic tone pinches at whatever is left of my patience, and I mash my lips together to keep from losing it. I could have left her in the hall with those assholes. They wouldn’t have thought twice about killing her.

Fruit—oranges, lemons, avocados and bananas—litters the floor along with fresh meat, a box of Oreos, and other groceries.

Needing a moment of peace, I close my eyes, licking my dry lips. It’s a mistake. She lunges for me, feral and violent, shoving at my chest. Her eyes are glassy with unshed tears, her long hair wild and cheeks flaming.

“Answer me, dammit!” She beats on me; her blows hurt, but not nearly as much as a bullet would. “How the hell are we going to get out of here alive?”

I ogle him with his golden hair, bare chest, and board shorts, and my body thrums the closer he gets, the heavy ache building low within me.

“Good morning.” He wades into the water.

Before I can respond, his lips are on mine, kissing me like it’s been years. He pushes me backward, deeper into the water until I’m chest-deep and he’s holding me by the waist.

“Hi.” I’m dazed and breathless.

He smiles, kisses my cheek, and slips his hand under my swimsuit to squeeze my ass cheek. I copy him, wriggling my hand into his shorts and digging my fingers into the firm flesh of his ass. We laugh, and it’s then I notice the dark circles under his eyes.

“When was the last time you slept?”

“I’ve had naps here and there over the past few days. I’m exhausted. Eli called a break because he needed to see Crystal. I have the rest of the day. Can you play hooky with me?”

“I can’t.”

Sinking his fingers into my dry hair, piled high on the top of my head, he cocks his head to the side and purses his lips.

“I didn’t think so but thought I’d ask. I miss you so much, my beautiful girl.”

He pulls me into his chest and kisses the top of my head. I sink into his warm embrace and try to keep the tears back.

This man never ceases to surprise me. I never knew how much I needed someone like him, until now. His lips peck at the corner of my mouth before he breaks away to study me. My eyes glitter with the threat of tears. Shit.

“What’s wrong? Fuck, did I do something?”

“No, not at all. These are silly tears of joy. I’m glad to see you. I miss you, too.”

He pulls me in for one more hug. “Come sleep with me for a bit.” He burrows his face into my neck, his moist lips sucking on my skin.

My heart sinks. “I can’t. I’ve got work.”

He groans, the rumble vibrating from his mouth to my neck and down into my chest. I shiver, holding him tighter.

“Evan, I want to know what happened, but I have a life now and you need to know…” She trails off, her eyes darting away from mine.

“What?”

Gazing up at me, she continues, “Whatever you have to say, it’s not going to change a thing. We’re over.”

My heart twists and breathing becomes difficult. Mother fuck, her words cut deep, hurting even though they aren’t true. Sure, she believes them on some level—she had to, in order to get through what I did. Yet, along with the hurt and disappointment swimming in her eyes, there’s also tenderness and love.

“Tell me you’re happy and I’ll walk away.”

We always pushed each other, challenged the other to face our fears, to be honest with ourselves, with each other. I need to hear her say it. I don’t believe it, but if she is over me, I need to hear it in her voice and see it in her face—not because I want to, but because it’s the only way I can even begin to accept that we’re over. Even then, it’s not possible.

“I’m happy.” Her tone is laden with bravado, but no true emotion. Even her gaze, which never wavers from mine, is flat.

Shaking my head, I briefly cast my eyes downward to suppress my smile. “No, you’re not.”

“Van.” I flinch at that fucking name.

As a child, I thought it was so fucking cool to have a nickname that only my best friends would call me. Now, hearing “Van” from her pretty lips, I want to obliterate the word from her vocabulary, fucking kiss the word out of her.

“You can call me asshole for all I care, you’re not happy,” I retort in frustration. Catching my tone, I breathe deeply and loosen my fists to relax. “Don’t lie to me, and most of all, don’t lie to yourself.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about. You want to see what you want. I’m with Greg, and we’re happy.”

She grimaces infinitesimally, then averts her eyes from me. Unable to read her, I’m not sure if it’s because she means it and doesn’t want to hurt my feelings or if the lie tastes nasty in her mouth.

“Sweetness, I know everything there is to know about you, without apology. You can’t lie to me.”

Burned by love once before, divorcee Olivia Cassidy isn’t looking for a recipe for “happily ever after”. The first time she thought she found forever, it turned out to be a marriage with no sizzle and no spice.

Now it’s up to Sam to show Olivia how delectable their future can be. He may know how to heat things up—both in the kitchen and in the bedroom—but is Sam really made to love her?

“Ladies, you left without saying goodbye,” he playfully admonishes, holding his hand over his heart like he’s wounded by our callous departure.

“We’re so sorry,” Erin purrs, stepping out from behind me to plant her palm on his forearm.

Sam briefly flicks his eyes to her before shifting to pin them on me, their sea green depths shimmering with something akin to hunger.

“Olivia, can we talk for a moment?”

Fits of giggles erupt from both Sin and Erin. Yes, these are my best friends, although I’m seriously reconsidering that at this moment as the two grown-ass women act like a bunch of star-struck teenagers.

Hanging my head in sheer embarrassment, I mutter, “Would you please leave us alone?”

Sam confidently inches closer to me, then it hits me—my friends’ lame outburst has diverted my attention from the real concern. Sam. I’m wildly turned on by this hot young man standing before me.

Stepping back, out of the circle of light, I’m plunged into darkness. Moving into the same spot I just vacated, his striking frame is illuminated by the fluorescent glow from above, like a spotlight beaming down on the main attraction. If I didn’t know he was a chef, I’d swear he was a model.

“I don’t usually do this,” he says.

“Do what?” I’m confused, my mind reeling and heart battering.

“Chase women.”

I snort. Real attractive, Olivia.

“Is that what you’re doing?” I quirk an eyebrow in question. He nods once, his smile still in place. “Well actually, come to think of it, of course you don’t. They usually fall at your feet,” I sarcastically add at the memory of the evening’s revolving door of women surrounding the kitchen. I bet tonight was an average turnout for him.

“Fall at my feet?” He chuckles, one side of his lips tipping up in amusement. “I must’ve missed that because I don’t remember any women at my feet. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have forgotten that.”

“I guess we see things differently,” I quip. “What do you want, Sam?”

“I want you to go out with me.”

Didn’t he get the hint? I shot him down in the restaurant. Damn, he’s beautiful. He could have anyone—so why me?
