Synopsis:

If you’d asked me a week ago, I would have told you that the best cupcakes were dark chocolate with chocolate cream cheese icing, that dancing in a crowd of magic wielders — the Adept — was better than sex, and that my life was peaceful and uneventful. Just the way I liked it. That’s what twenty-three years in the magical backwater of Vancouver will get you — a completely skewed sense of reality. Because when the dead werewolves started showing up, it all unraveled … except for the cupcake part. That’s a universal truth.

This 68,000 word urban fantasy is the first book of the Dowser Series by author Meghan Ciana Doidge.

Review:

All my favourite paranormal creatures thrown together with cupcakes – what fun to be had! Goes down as another off my 2015 Reading Challenge – A book with magic. This one definitely has its fair share of magic.

Intricate story involving a lot of characters that all seem to radiate towards Jade. She draws people to her no matter who or ‘what’ they are. This story is about her finding herself, and trying to not always hide behind her grandmother and mother.

Jade knows about magic but has always thought that she didn’t carry much within her. They only thing she thinks she can do is make amazing cupcakes (with quite interesting names!) and draw magic to her, or more to the point magical beings. When they are around she can almost feed off their energy, which makes her feel alive. Her life has always been about following the rules (unlike her wayward sister) but when a vampire turns up at her cupcake shop they seem to get thrown out the window. He brings with him his own troubles. When he insists that he is there to see if she is the one that has something to do with the recent bought of murders she can’t help but think that she has stepped into the twilight zone. This is a story that consists of a very interesting mix of witches, werewolves and a vampire. Put them all together with some murders thrown into the mix to solve and you have yourself a party.

You are practically begging Jade to get with at least one of the hotties that have crossed her path though throughout the book (my monies on the vampire later in the series). There are some very fine specimens to choose from – even if they might scare her a little at first. You have a vampire, werewolf, werecat or the human lawyer to choose from. So tell me, who would you think is the most tempting or scary?

Some parts of the story are a bit predicable and the ending is seen a mile off but I was still drawn into the world that has been created. I am intrigued to see how Jade will grow into a much more confident and assertive woman now she knows that truth about who she is and what she is really capable of.

Synopsis:

A woman of her word, Delia Montgomery has never backed down from a challenge. But if there was ever a time when she wished she’d read the fine print, now is it.

After agreeing to a friendly wager with her sexy rival, he reveals the competition is simply drinks at Seductions.

She’d be a liar if she denied being worried. How could she possibly resist his advances in a place where drinks flow freely and passion pumps with the beat of the music?

Review:

I liked this one a bit more than the first, might have something to do with the fact I love shifter stories, especially ones with big sexy alpha wolves.

After the death of her father Delia inherited his multi-million dollar organisation, she has had to deal with difficult businessmen but none more so than Luke Ravenwood. For the past eighteen months he has been fighting with her to sell a piece of land and has finally managed to convince her to a wager, if he wins he gets the land and if she wins he never mentions it again. What she doesn’t realise is that the wager he has in mind is to have a drinks date at Seductions, the hottest new club in town where all the Other love to play.

Luke has wanted Delia from the moment he met her and being an alpha wolf he is used to getting what he wants. He needs to be creative and patient to get his woman but after eighteen months he knows he needs to step things up. Which is why he creates a little wager to get her alone with him in a very intimate setting.

You can feel the attraction between them from the moment they are in each other’s company. Delia likes to poke to wolf to get a reaction out of him and it doesn’t take long for her to realise that she actually likes the thrill of the chase. The thought of being caught by Luke is the only thing she has been thinking about since that first meeting.

“Drummond, you’ve been holding out on me. I don’t suppose you’re willing to forgo the land discussion and give me a chance to win this lovely creature.” These first words from him nearly made her come in her seat as no-one has ever made her feel so wanted before and looked at her with such hunger. She has been enthralled with him ever since, which is the reason why she has tried to stay away knowing if she gets too close she might get hurt.

She doesn’t seem to understand that once he choose her she would be the last person who should fear of getting hurt as he would do anything to keep her from harm. She needs to learn to let her hair down and start to relax. Maybe then they can both get what they have been wanting for the past eighteen months.

Book Review: ‘Her Kilted Wolf’ by Tabitha Conall

Her Kilted Wolf

Title: Her Kilted Wolf

Published: 16th July 2014

Publisher: Little Death Books

Author: Tabitha Conall

Synopsis:

Two werewolves, a Scottish castle and the power of fate.

Highly ranked in her werewolf pack in spite of being female, American Mattie Sloane travels to Scotland with her Alpha, never suspecting the trip will turn her life upside down.

A rogue by nature, werewolf Colin MacPherson has to shape up fast when he finds his mate in Mattie.

Just one problem—they both love their countries and don’t want to move. How can they be mates an ocean apart?

Review:

Well this was a quick read, but I liked that it was short after the long books I have been reading lately. I really needed a change and as I liked ‘A Minor Shift’ by Tabitha I thought I would check out the start to this series aswell.

Mattie has come over from America with her Alpha to be part of peace talks between the ‘Others’ out there. She has is sixth in her pack and the highest ranking member that came over, after her Alpha that is, so she is in charge of the others but mostly she has to keep an eye out for her Alpha’s safety. While strolling through the castle, after getting a bit lost, she comes across the most alluring scent known to shifters, her mates. She follows the scent right up to a shut door and when the door opens and she is faced with a wet, wolf shifter, hunk of a man in nothing but a towel she is not disappointed.

Colin has always been a bit of a player, sewing his wild oats for some time now. So when he catches the scent of his mate his first point of call is to send the maid, whose bust he had is head in, on her merry way. He first thinks to head off his mate, but realising he smells of another does the only thing he can think of, run in the opposite direction to get into a shower. He thinks that he is probably the only wolf in history to run away from his mate and even though he is glad he has found her he can’t help but wonder about what he will be giving up to have her. That is until he opens the door and comes to face with Mattie.

With both being shifters they know that when you smell your mate they are the one for you so when you come face to face with them you do the only natural thing, jump them so you can indulge in some hot shifter passion. After the first, of what you can tell will be many rounds of red hot sex is out of their systems they are faced with a bit of a dilemma. With an ocean between them and neither wanting to move, where are they going to live?

As shifter romance’s go this one had a good start but I felt that it could have been a bit longer so you could see the characters develop a little bit more. I feel that this was more like a preface to the series than the start of it as not a lot happens. Having said that I like that it was a light start to the series as I think it will get more interesting the further the story as a whole develops. If you like paranormal books then this author is definitely one to keep your eye on.

Release Blitz and Review: ‘Midnight Moonrising’ by K.S. Haigwood and Anne Conley

 Title: Midnight Moonrising
Series: Moonrising #1
Author: K.S. Haigwood & Anne Conley
Genre: Urban Fantasy Romance
 Release Date: July 31, 2015
Blurb

Mena wants the Master Vampire of Montgomery, Alabama, but the wolf inside her wants the homicide detective working the case of the man she murdered.

Mena’s life is complicated. She’s just murdered and buried her husband, the local wolf pack’s alpha – problem number one. Phoenix, the High Vampire, is the one her heart beats for, but not the one her wolf wants – problem number two. Her wolf pines for Alex, the human homicide detective who might just send her down for murder – three. Four, wolves and vampires don’t mix. Five, she has no clue how to be alpha, keep her pack safe while fighting off challengers with every step she takes, or what it would take to tame her wolf, which is the biggest problem of them all. Because the beast might just forfeit Mena’s life when its insatiable thirst for blood is unleashed on the world in just a few short days, with the next full moon.

Which should be doable. Except for the Nexus… and the little extra problem of bonding with a stranger.

Review:

OMG I’m not even sure where to begin with how good (and very complex) this story is. If you are looking for a quick read then hold off from this one until you have a free day, as there are 62 chapters in this baby. It is the type of book where if you have to put it down, because say you have to go to work, you will be thinking about it the whole day until you can get back to it to see how it plays out. The story is told from lots of peoples perspectives so you get a really complex view on how it all plays out for each of them, just keep note of who’s head you are in at the time. Now I found out that there is a prequel to this book but if you haven’t read it I don’t think it matters, you will just have a bit of a head-ups with who some of the characters are.

So Mena has had a bit of a rough week, finding out your husband of 12 years has been hiding the fact that not only is he a werewolf but Alpha of the Montgomery pack and been having an affair would be enough to make anyone feel a bit crazy. Then have said husband bite you making you a werewolf too and have to shoot him before he kills you, ultimately making you the new alpha of the pack, would be putting an end to the week from hell.

Things then just go from bad to worse; the wolf in her head is giving her grief and seems to want the one person she shouldn’t, Alex the cop assigned to catch her husbands murderer, her vampire boyfriend Phoenix wants to protect her but untimely ends up trying to control her instead causing issues, pack members are challenging her for the right to be alpha (so its kill or be killed), throw in the fact that others in her pack are trying to kill her for revenge before she has even been a werewolf for a few days and you can see that things are only going to get worse before they get better.

Both the men in her life are wanting a part of her and with her wolf taking over more she has to make a deal with the devil, so to speak, to protect the one she loves. If she lets the wolf have her fun with Alex she will let her see Phoenix without taking over and hurting him, which is all Mena cares about. The chemistry and passion between Mena and Phoenix comes right off the page, you can see why they are great together, and so you do feel a bit weird when Alex gets to be all over Mena when the wolf is in control. You want to shout at her ‘Come on girl get a back bone and show that wolf whose boss’.

You are taken on such an emotional rollercoaster throughout this book and you are literally thinking what else can be thrown at Mena to keep her from being safe with the one man she really loves, Phoenix. You will be laughing at times, get hot passion thrown at you, get angry and then feel like you are breaking yourself with the emotional turmoil that Mena has to over come. Only time will tell whether she will get through it all and whom she will be with at the end of it. Phoenix tells her that she will be happy at the end of all this but he doesn’t say who she will be happy with.

So you have vampires, wolf shifters, lion shifters (now Ace coming into the mix is interesting) and witches making this one hell of a complex journey that you can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Excerpt

With everyone thinking I was angry, I was taking a wild guess that it would be at least thirty minutes before anyone realized I was gone. That was a good head start. From the vague vibe I was feeling from Jess and the other traitors, I was looking at covering a distance of about four miles. I ran that nearly every morning, and the time it took to get there would allow my wolf and me time to figure out what we were going to do when we got there.

Cutting the bitch was what my wolf wanted to do, and I couldn’t honestly say that I wasn’t on board with that plan, but I was smart enough to know that I couldn’t take on eight werewolves on my own. I would have to find their hideout and come back with my pack. Bringing Phoenix and his clan to watch my back in case any of my wolves were really on Jessica’s side was a smart thing to do, so I would let them come, too, not that I would really get a choice in the matter; I doubted he would stay behind even if I begged him to.

A loud clatter had my head whipping around to look behind me again. An aluminum trash can lay on its side, its contents spilling into the street. A tabby cat peeked around the edge of the torn trash bag and I exhaled in relief. I was a sad case, indeed. I laughed at myself. I was not used to being the monster.

“I aim to change that, Mena.”

I rolled my eyes at my wolf. “You just be you and let me be me and we’ll get along just fine.”

Soft laughter filled my head and I had to smile. I had to admit that I liked her, regardless of how much trouble she was causing me with Phoenix. At least we had come to a compromise. I didn’t know how well said compromise was going to work out, or even if it would at all, but I was willing to try. Everyone deserved a shot at happiness, even with as insane as our case may be.

As I turned my head back around to continue on my journey, I ran smack-dab into the hard chest of a man. He was in shadow, so I couldn’t see his face. Stumbling back, I attempted to get my balance, but his arms closed tightly around my body, jerking me to him and trapping my arms down at my sides so I couldn’t move.

Struggling against his solid hold on me, I opened my mouth to let out a scream, but he twisted me around and clamped a hand over my mouth so fast that I didn’t know what was happening until I was being pulled backward, away from the security of the streetlights that lined the suburban road.

I raised my knee up then brought my foot down hard on the toe of his shoe. He let out a muffled grunt, but continued to drag me into the shadows.

This had to be one of the werewolves. The strength alone told me that. They had to have been watching my house, just waiting for me to leave. This bastard was going to kill me if I didn’t do something.

My wolf stirred under my skin. She wanted out and it was the first time since I’d been bitten that I agreed with that plan. With only a little more than human strength and quick reflexes, it wasn’t possible for me to handle a grown male werewolf on my own.

My final option, before letting my wolf free, was try to at least injure him. I hoped that would be enough to make him loosen his grip on me enough so I could run. If he gave chase, I would have to concede and let my wolf take over.

Gripping the dagger tighter in my palm, I rotated my wrist and drove the blade into his side as hard as I could. An ear-piercing ululation erupted from his throat and he let go of me. I didn’t wait or look back. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me, adrenaline and my wolf giving me the speed and strength to push my muscles past what a human would be able to endure.

“Mena… Mena!” I heard the cry behind me, but my mind wasn’t registering anything except panic and the need to get as far away from my attacker as possible. “Mena—wait! It’s me…” A strangled groan had me slowing. “…it’s… it’s Phoenix. I—I’m so sorry, Mena.”

I froze, not wanting to look back at the man, terrified that what he’d spoken was true. If it was—if I turned and saw those ice-blue eyes staring back at me, it would destroy any trust I had ever had in him.

“Please, Mena, I never meant to hurt you. I was only trying to scare you so you would realize what a stupid stunt going off on your own to find the killers was. What were you thinking?”

The blood rushed through my veins at an impossible speed, and fury washed over me in waves as I stood there trying to decide whether to walk away or allow my wolf to rip Phoenix’s head off. She was all for the second option.

I heard him cough, and then groan in agony. I imagined he was pulling the dagger out of whatever organ I had been lucky enough to hit. There was a lot of heavy, ragged breathing and two more guttural-sounding coughs. It appeared as though I had hit a lung. Too bad it wasn’t his heart! I wasn’t sure stabbing him in the heart with a silver blade would kill him, but I would have put money on a bet that it would have been a hell of a lot more painful.

I turned my head to glare at him, but the hatred I had expected to feel wasn’t there. He had fallen to his knees, and his head was bent, his eyes focused on the bright red stain spreading across his new shirt.

Shaking my head, I looked up to the sky and asked, “Why me?” After receiving no answer, I sighed and began the one-hundred-meter walk back to Phoenix.
